First GaNcian Society of Detroit and the Cong. Beth Abraham

Tucker Wins Ovation at Highly
Lauded Halevy Society Concert
An enthusiastic audience that nearly filled to capacity
the auditorium of the Art Institute Sunday evening gave
a great ovation to Richard Tucker, tenor of the Metropolitan
Opera. Tucker's Kol Nid.re, sung to the accompaniment of
the chorus of Detroit Halevy Singing Society and Cleveland
Jewish Singing Society singers, and organist Melvin Zeidler;
was the o•ly Jewish selection
the first portion of the program.
It literally brought the house
down and . put the audience in

half of the pro-
gram, with Harold Fink at the
piano. The audience cheered it-
self hoarse and the noted singer
sang as an encore "A Plea to
God" ("A Din Toire Mit Gott'').
"Creation." Slavensky was well
received in the several seleCtions
he sang.
Dr. William Klein, presid- ent
of Halevy, announced that Leo
Low was unable to come here for
the concert to conduct part of
the program due to illness in
his family .
It was, in its totality, a very
good show, and was a tribute to
the efforts of Dr. Klein, himself
a member of the choir, • under
whose leadership Halevy has in-
augurated a weekly radio pro-
gram on Sunday evenings on
Station. WKMH and is erecting
its own building on Linwood and
Fleet streets.
Commenting on The Jewish
News editorial, "A Deluded Tex-
an," in our issue of May 6, Mrs.
Clyde T. Caldwell, president-
elect of the Michigan Division
of the American Association of
University Women, 2112 Shef-
field Drive. Kalamazoo, Mich.,
that AAUW nationally has en-
dorsed the liberalized DP meas-
ure, H. R. 1344, and that the
Washington branch, which was
addressed by Congressman Gos-
sert, to whom the editorial made
reference, is but one of a thous-
and branches in the U. S. Mrs.
Caldwell's letter to The Jewish
News reads:
"Your editorial in , the Jewish
News of May 6- regarding "A
Deluded Texan" has been called
to my attention.
"I would like to point out that
as a national organization our
International Relations Com-
mittee, acting for AAUW decided
to support HR. 1344, "as it was
the closest to the broad. prin-
ciples which the association has
supported since such legislation
was first filed." This comes under
Item 14 of our broad legislation
program, adopted as a conven-
tion body when we meet every
two years.
"The American Association of
University Women has more
than a thousand branches in the
United States. The Washington
branch of AAUW is but one of
this thousand.
"I thought. these facts might
be valuable to call to your at-
tention."
