Early Local Jewish
History Was Placed
In Archives in 1900

By IRVING I. KATZ
Executive Secretary
of Temple Beth El
The other day I came into
possession of a letter which
states that on the last day of
last century a history of
the Jews of Detroit was placed
in a box, sealed, and deposited,
along with other historical ma-
terial of Detroit, in the archives
of the city to be opened on the
last day of the present century.
The letter, written by Mayor
William C. Maybury, under date
of Dec. 29, 1900, is addressed to
Louis Blitz, who was then presi-
dent of Temple Beth El, and
reads as follows:

EXECUTIVE OFFICE
DETROIT, MICH.
WILLIAM C. MA yBURY, MAYOR
Dec. 29, 1900
SUBJECT: "The Jewish People in
'Detroit in the 19th cen-
tury and their relations to
- social, commercial and re-
ligious life',
My dear Sir:
I am particularly desirous that those
who witness the coming of the 21st cen-
tury shall have evidence that those who
are permitted to see the opening of the
20th century have appreciated the glorious
inheritance of the century closing, and I
am desirous that there should be put on
record letters from men prominent in the
commercial, religious, professional and
moral ongoing of the city and state. The
letters so prepared will be placed in a
box and sealed, to be opened a century
hence. I have therefore asked ladies and
gentlemen prominent in these various de-
partments of life's work to prepare for
me a paper, yours to be on the subject
mentioned above, made as concise as
possible. and to be deVosited as hereto-
fore stated.
I will place the box with the papers
a certificate that each paper was handed
to me on the closing day of the 19th
century, that the bor was deposited in the
archives of the city on the opening day
of the 20th century.
19th century, that the box was deposited
in the archievs of the city, on the opening
day of the 20th century.
If such a box had been deposited 100
years ago, how many facts of the history
of Michigan, as well as Detroit, would be
disclosed that are now lost, and things
which we now look upon as history
would, from such a record, be proven to
be but legend or fable.
I believe that the papers which I am
seeking to put away in this form will be
invaluable in the long future, and that
the generation which is privileged to
open the box will be grateful for what

Sentence Romanian Jew
For Betraying Deportees

BUCHAREST— (JTA) —Jacob
Windisch . of Siret, Bukovina,
was sentenced to five years' im-
prisonment by a Bucharest
court on a charge that he mis-
used his authority while secre-
tary of the Judenrat of the city
of Obodova, which was estab-
lished during the Romanian oc-
cupation of Transnistria. Win-
disch was found guilty of ac-
cepting bribes from wealthy
Jewish deportees whom he saved
from transfer to slave labor
camps in the Nazi-occupied part
of the Ukraine. For every rich
man who bribed Windisch, a
poor man was put on the list,
the court was told.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A total of
62,600 Jewish immigrants — the
majority of them displaced per-
sons—reached the U.S. between
May, 1946, and April, 1949, ac-
cording to a survey made public
by United Service for New
Americans.

Turkish Press Extends
Israeli News Coverage
ISTANBUL, (JTA)—For the
first time in many years the
major Turkish newspapers have
assigned regular correspondents
to Israel. The reports received
from these correspondents have
been extremely favorable to the
Jewish state and are being fa-
lowed with interest by, the Turk-
