A Lesson From the Irish

The American Council for Judaism has asked the American
press to refrain fron using the word Jew when describing Israeli
citizens ... Although it is doubtful the Council can learn anything
it would be well for those gentlemen to digest a story about an
Irishman and a Jew . . . Chief Rabbi Herzog of Israeli recently
addressed the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Elizabeth, N. J. . .
Dr. Herzog had been chief rabbi of Ireland before settling in Pal-
estine and he is a master of Gaelic ... On opening his address he
referred to his listeners as former compatriots . . . Whereupon the
chairman of the meeting interrupted him with the remark:
"Rabbi, I just wish to remind you that once an Irishman always
an Irishman."
