RABBI MILTON ROSENBAUM
Detroit rabbis have released
a joint statement in endorse-
ment of the 1949 United Jewish
Appeal, supported in Detroit
through the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, which opened officially
Sunday, April 24. Those endors-
ing the statement include
members of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis, represented by
Rabbi Isaac Stollman, Rabbi
Morris Adler, Rabbi Leon Fram,
Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer and
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal.
The statement reads:
THIS IS THE YEAR OF HOMECOMING
The Bible tells how our ancestors ate
unleavened bread during their years of
wandering in the desert.. Each year, at
the Seder table as in the Passover season
just past, we remember their suffering
and their deprivation. We seek to share,
if only symbolically. in the experiences
of the Jewish people more than three
thousand years ago.
Today, modern counterparts of those
who left Egypt are on their way again
to the Promised Land. From the DP
camps, from Eastern Europe, from North
Africa, they are streaming to Israel—
arriving now at the rate of more than
25,000 a month.
What a miracle we have witnessed in
our • lifetime! At this time a year ago
there was no Jewish state. British im-
migration quotas were in full effect in
Palestine. Almost all the refugees who
arrived in the Jewish homeland came un-
der cover of night or fog in "illegal"
ships. Thousands were turned back from
the very shores of their objective, to lan-
guish for months in Cyprus, or to return
all the way to the lands whence they
came.
The picture today is a different one.
Free immigration to Israel is a reality
a minimum of 260,000 refugees will enter
this year. The miserable camps on Cyprus
have been emptied. Before the end of
1949, all the Jewish DP camps of Europe
and Israel will have been closed, and will
stand merely as reminders of the shame
of a "civilized" world that permitted
hundreds of thousands of Jews to be
prisoners for years after their "libera-
tion"".
It . would be heartening to say that all
the problems of the Jews of Europe and
Israel have been solved. But many serious
and pressing difficulties remain. Above
all, the vast immigration to Israel threat-
ens to overwhelm that small country.
The 800,000 Jews of Israel cannot pro-
vide for the hundreds of thousands who
will join them during 1949.
At this moment, more than 40.000 new-
comers are living in reception centers in
Israel under intolerable conditions. Eight.
ten, and twelve people, including women
and children. live in open tents, subject
to all sorts of weather conditions. Money
to provide them with proper food and
clothing is fast running out.
Israel expects us to help in this suner-_
human task they have undertaken. They
do not want to close their gates. They
want every Jew who seeks a home in
Israel to find it there. They count on
American assistance. through the $250,-
000.000 United Jewish Appeal, to provide
the financial support necessary so that
newcomers to Israel may live as free
and self-respecting citizens and not under
the same conditions that they lonew for
so many years in the DP camps.
Money raised through the UJA serves
a host. of needs throughout the world. In
addition to aiding immigrants to Israel
and providing for , the development an d
construction of the country, UJA funds
help in the rehabilitation of Jewish com-
munities in all parts of Europe. They
offer relief and emigration assistance to
the impoverished and oppressed Jews of
North Africa. They provide care and
guidance for Jewish refugees arriving in
America.
This year we can participate in more
than a symbolic way in the sufferings
and problems of our fellow Jews. We can
rededicate ourselves to their salvation and
deliverance. We can determine anew that
our prompt and generous gifts to the
United Jewish Appeal through the Allied
Jewish Campaign of Detroit will make
1949 truly a "Year of Homecoming" for
the Jewish people.
