1VIP Richard Crossman Describes
Jews' Rapid Pace in State-Building
.
Richard H. S. Crossman, Mem-
ber of the British Houie of Com-
mons, who has • been leading the
opposition to Ernest Bevin with-
in his own party, in an interview
here • Tuesday preceding his talk
at - the Jewish Center, under
auspices of the Detroit Serv-
ice Group, described the progress
made by Israel and the rapid
pace set by the Jewish settlers
in building the Jewish State. Mr.
Crossman, who was a member of
the Anglo-American Committee

on Palestine, recently returned
from Israel where he was the
guest of President Chaim Weiz-
mann in Rehobot.
Urging unstinted support for
causes which are engaged in
building Israel, Mr. Crossman
especially commended Dr. Weiz-
mann's efforts in the field of
chemical 'research through the
Weizmann Chemical Institute.
Mr. Crossman stated during his
visit here, which he utilized for
a study of labor conditions to be
described in a book he is pres-
ently writing, that he is con-
vinced of the need' for the settle
mennin Israel of American and
tritish Jews. Referring to Israel
as "an elite community," Mr.
Crossman said that an elite im-
migration will be needed to su-
pervise the vast colonization
scheme in Israel and that Ameri-
can, British and South African
Jews provide the finest available
element for this purpose.
Naturally, he emphasized, such
settlers would have tp give up
their present citizenship _and as-
sume residence in Israel.
Mr. -Crossman said that the
latest events in Israel served to
underrtine the destructive ac-
tivities of anti-Semites. Asserting
that every non-Jew has been in-
fected with the bacillus of anti-
Semitism, he said that even the
worse enemies of the Jews have
respect and admiration for Israel
as a •result of what had trans-
pired during the past year.
Mr. Crossman declared that
"Israel is the focal point in the

He : expressed confidence that

Israeli Lebanese
Talks Under Way
(Direct JTA Telegraph Wires to The
Jewish News)
Israeli - Lebanese armistice
talks got under way Tuesday aft-
er an initial misunderstanding
which delayed the start of nego-
tiations. Talks were scheduled
to be held at Ras El Nakura on
the Israel-Lebanese frontier, and
a dispute arose as to whether they
were to be held in the Lebariese-
frM. held customs house.
A compromise was reached
whereby the talks' were held
in the customs house and Wed-
nesday were held in the police
10:30 a. m. Tuesday, Israeli
time, under the chairmanship of
Henry Vigier, aide to UN medi-
ator Ralph J. Bunche. UN ob-
servers from Haifa and Beirut
were in attendance.
Shabtai Roserme, legal advisor
of the Israeli 'foreign office, who
is expected to do the actual draft-
ing of the agreement, is attending
talks from the outset.
At the insistence of the Leba-
nese, armistice talks conducted on
military levels are being held
secret; and newspapermen are not
being permitted access to the
customs house. The Israeli dele-
gation is expected to exert strong
pressure on the Lebanese to force
