The juniors and teen agers of
the Jewish Community Center
are busy planning their PURIM
CARNIVALS.
Costumes, bazaar booths and a
grand march are a few of the
activities being planned for the
afternoon of Sunday, March 13,
when the Dexter branch juniors
will join the fun in the auditorium
of the Aaron DeRoy Memorial
Building. Receipts from the club
booths will be sent as a gift to
the children of an Israeli colony.
Saturday evening, March 19,
the teen agers will hold a carni-
val and dance in the auditorium
of the main building. The Teen
Age social • committee and the
teen age clubs are plakning skits,
booths and holiday delicacies.

Sabbath tales and singing will
highlight the Oneg Shabbat of
the DEXTER MOTHERS' CLUB
at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5,
at Bnai Moshe synagogue.

Child" will be the topic directed
to the WEDNESDAY EVENING
DISCUSSION GROUP by Henry
Feinberg in the Ginsburg Lounge
of the Jewish Community Cen-
ter at 9 p.m. March 9. Feinberg
is the psychologist for the Jew-
ish Social Service BUreau. On
March 16, the group will hear
.the "Program of the Michigan
CIO for 1949," to be presented
by August . Scholle, president of
the Michigan CIO Council.

of Detroit and many of the local
high schools and other recreation
centers.
Jewish Community Center first
and second place medals will be
awarded the open events for men:
40-yard freestyle, 150-yard back-
stroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 120-
yard individual medley; for wo-
men: low board (1 meter) diving
(1 required dive, 5 optional); - 60-
yard individual medley, 120-yard
medley relay.
There will be no admission
charge for the preliminaries at
4:30 p.m. The finals will begin
at 8 p.m.

Center Presents
Cellist Schuster

Joseph Schuster, world-re-
nowned cellist, will make his
Detroit debut at a concert at
8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at
the Jewish Community Center.
Schuster was solo cellist of the
New York Philharmonic until
four years ago. Since that time
he has toured the country as a
concert artist.
Admission will be by invitation
only, which can be obtained at
the Center office prior to the day
of 'the concert, according to Mrs.
Royal Maas, chairman of the
Center music committee.

Volunteer of the Week

Mrs. Joseph Geschelin Honored
For Continual Community Work

Red Feather Volunteer-of-the-
Week, Mrs. Joseph Geschelin,
17546 Pennington, successfully
combines community and family
activities. She has been awarded
the Red Feather lapel pin for her
continual Community Chest
work.
Mrs. Geschelin has been a
member of the Friendly Visitors'
executive committee for six years
and was chairman of this Com-
munity Chest women's group for
two years.
Friendly Visitors, a group of
men and women interested in the
problems of old people, were or-
ganized in 1940 to visit and pro-
vide recreation for the aged in
Detroit. Since then, the Friendly
Visitors have expanded their
program to include the organi-
zation of Old Timers clubs
throughout the city.
At present Mrs. Geschelin is
chairman of the committee on
Recreation for the Aged, Council
Of Social Agencies, and is chair-
man of Recreation for the Aged,
Midwestern Region of the Jew-
ish Welfare Board.
She is a member of the commit-
tee on Housing and Recreation
for the Aged and the Chronically

St. Louis Orchestra Here

The St. Louis Symphony Or-
chestra with its full quota of
more than 85 players, conducted
by Vladimir Golschmann, will
give a concert here Monday,
March 14, at the Masonic Audi-
torium.
For years the St. Louis Orches-
tra has been considered one of
the finest in the United States.
Founded 69 years ago, it is the
second oldest symphony orches-
tra in this country. When • Gol-
schmann took over the orchestra
17 years ago, the orchestra gave
its two regular concerts a week
in a hall seating 1800. In 1934,
it moved into the Opera House
of the new Kiel Auditorium seat-
ing 3500, and most of the per-
formances since have played to
full houses.
His concertmaster and assist-
ant conductor, Harry Farbman, is
famous in his own right. Ac-
knowledged as one of the finest
violinists in America, he has
been a favorite of New York
musical connoisseurs.

LZOA Parents Group

Postpone Dance Classes

The Jewish Folk Schools have
organized a parent - teachers' .
group to foster cooperation be-
tween school and parents and to
deal with the problem of super-
vision of children who tarvel by
bus. The group's initial project
will be the raising of funds for
the purchase of a new bus.
Samuel Epstein was unanim-
ously elected chairman of the
organization. Other officers are:
vice chairman, Mrs. J. Glaser;
secretary, Mrs. M. Salinger, and
treasurer, I. Sherman.

First session of the Jewish Cen-
ter ballroom dance classes has
been postponed to Thursday,
March 24. Instructors will be
Herman Harrison and Audrey
Schneider. Miss Schneider is a
specialist in South American
dances.
