Four hundred and forty-seven
Jewish refugees from Shanghai
went on a special "Liberty Train"
which carrie& them across the
United States to New York where
they will board ship for Israel.
The refugees, mostly DPs whe
fled Europe before the war and
settled in China, arrived from
Shanghai aboard the American
President Liner General Gordon.
They were not permitted to leave
the train while crossing the U.
S., but embarked in New York
aboard IRO. chartered Army
Transport General Stewart for
the Atlantic crossing to Italy
where they will transfer, prob-
ably, to an Israeli liner for the
last leg of their journey. The
long trans-Pacific route to Is-
rael was taken by the refugees
because of Egyptian control of
the Suez Canal route.

Parents Announce TrothrFederations Demand
NEW YORK (JTA)—The $4,-
000,000 refund authorized by the
International Refugee Organiza-
tion to private Jewish agencies
for transporting refugees to
Israel, while "a welcome step
forward," represents only a
partial fulfillment of IRO's re-
sponsibilities, the Institute of
Overseas Studies of the Council
of Jewish Federations and Wel-
fare Funds declared.
The Institute asserted that the
IRO refund which only covers
the period from May 18, 1948, to
Jan. 31, 1949, places a "special
and unique discriminatory limit"
on financing the movement of
displaced persons to Israel.
The Institute called upon the
IRO to assume the total cost of
moving eligible Jewish refugees.
It estimated the cost through Jan.
31, at $8,000,000 and an equal
amount to complete the move-
ment to Israel. The statement
added that "there is no question
about the IRO's ability to pay in
full" for the immigration to
Israel. It also called for the
IRO to reimburse voluntary
agencies for expenditures in other
areas of care for DP's.
