Nat Holman and his missus
are leaving for Israel about May
1. The City College mentor is
going overseas to instruct Israelis
in the art of basketball with the
hope that next year or the sea-
son after an Israeli quintet will
come over here to engage our
college hoopsters.
Nat is sending scads of written
material on the game ahead of
him so that it can be translated
into Hebrew and be disseminated
throughout the land. It is hoped
that the better players will be
picked out by the time Holman
arrives so that he can work with
them. They in turn will return
-to their colonies and impart what
they have learned from the Old
Master to their colony mates.
Holman's Courage
Holman, who has just com-
pleted 30 years as City College
basketball coach, created quite a
furor in New York basketball
circles on the eve of the recent
traditional Garden battle be-
tween City College and St. Johns.
Nat insisted that if a certain
official assigned to the game was
not removed, City College would
not take the floor. Asa Bushnell,
head of the Eastern Intercolle-
giate group which controls ap-
pointments of referees, in. San
Francisco at the time, refused to
make the change.
Accordingly Holman informed
Dave Walsh, Bushnell's assistant
in the matter, that City was not
going on the Garden Court.
Walsh quickly made a decision
and changed officials to the de-
light of City College .,and the
dismay of St. Johns who thought
the referee involved was being
put on a terrible spot by Hol-
man.
Nat has requested Bushnell
not to assign that particular
referee to City games. Conse-
quently, he has only worked one
City garhe this season, that be-
ing the Oklahoma game in which
he called several walking viola-
tions against a City player. Hol-
man insisted he wasp making a
wrong call and right then and
there determined not to condone
his participation in future City
College contests.
Much is said about the poor
officiating that takes place in
the Garden but nobody had guts
enough to come out and say that
'a particular official wasn't quali-
fied to referee. Nat's decision to
put the finger on an official takes
courage and we are glad to see
him make the move. Adolph
Rupp, of Kentucky, earlier in
the year, also asked that a cer-
tain ref be kept out of Ken-
tucky's game.
Jewish Referees
The whole officiating set-up in
the Eastern area smells to high
heaven. Several Jewish officials,
highly competent, have found
that Garden assignments are few
and far between. Julie Meyer,
definitely one of the best refs in
the game, has only worked two
Garden contests thus far.
One ref, Tubby Raskin, fed
up with the politics involved,
resigned from the organization.

played in handling out assign-
ments. Raskin wrote back telling
him that he, together with
Walsh, were in wrong and be-
cause he (Raskin) could not see
any hope for improvement he
was dropping out of the organi-
zation. For the record, Raskin,
former Brooklyn College men-
tor, is one of the better officials
in the East.
The only 'Jewish official who
gets a good amount of work' is
Lou Eisenstein who is close be-
hind Pat Kennedy in all around
court efficiency. Sam Schonfeld
is another who gets regular work
but he is so cast because he once
threatened to, form a referee's
group which would book its own
games. The Eastern group un-
der Bushnell put a stop to it
somehow and ever since Sammy
has been getting good assign-
ments.
