Canadian Committee
Clarifies 'Oliver Twist'
Controversy with Time

In a statement issued by the
Joint Publications Committee of
the Canadian Jewish Congress
and Bnai Brith, Time and Life
magazine reports on the Canadian
British movie "Oliver Twist"
were labeled as "misleading and,
in crucial respects, totally false."
Rabbi Abraham L. Feinberg of
Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto,
chairman of the committee, has
outlined an extensive correspond-
ence with the editors of Time.
The committee had asked for a
retraction of the Time,-Life story
which misrepresented the Con-
gress' view on the film.
Lengthy negotiations ended in
a letter from James Linen, Time
publisher, advising that further
.discussion of the issue would be
"unsatisfactory; if not unwise."
The Congress-Bnai Brith state-
ment declared that no public pro-
test was made against the film,
which was premiered in Toronto,
to avoid sensationalism, but that
the committee had contacted the ..
Toronto office of J. Arthur Rank,
the film's producer, protesting the
showing.
Public statements condemning
the film for its anti-Semitic por-
trayal. of Fagin, have been ef-
