`The Curious Wine;'
Intermarriage Story

Bianca Bradbury writes excep-
tionally well and her novel, "The
Curious Wine" • (published by
Beechhurst Press, 296 Broadway,.
New Yorl 7), will undoubtedly
have a •large and appreciative
following.
It is the storyfof Marty .Towns
end who arouses the hatred of
her rich mother for haying mar-
ried the Jewish doctor, Luke Be-
loff. Her father; Dr: David towns-
end, had left to liVe alone in his
office. Mrs. Townsend finances a
plot to ruin the young_ doctor._
Luke emerges victorious in the
malpractice lawsuit hi which he
is represented by a Jewish at-
torney and all ends well ' for the
intermarried couple and: their
new:born son.
The trouble with this story is
that it could easily deal with non-
Jews. The man discriminated
against could-well be an. Italian
or a Greek in this prejudice-laden
New England 'community. Per-
haps the strongest point made is
that advanced by Dr. ToWnsend
about children having absolutely
no prejudices until they adopt
their parents' convictions.
But the explanations for Jew-
ish reactions offered by Luke in
a moment of despair, on the eve
of the trumped-up- trial, are not
realistic. They are the usual tripe

about Jews huddling together.
The explanation of the self-aban-
don by Jews in d camp, at a
-dance-7-"like foreigners"-is not
too complimentary,
But it is- evident that Bianca
Bradbury aims to be fair and to
smash prejudices.. As a novel,
