Dr. Silver's Father
Dies in Jerusalem
JERUSALEM — Rabbi Moshe
Silver, father of Dr. Abba Hillel
Silver, chairman of the Ai-nerican
section of the Jewish Agency,
died here Jan. 12 at the age of
86.
Rabbi Silver was born in Lith-
uania and came to the United
States in 1897. In 1904 he found-
ed the first boys' Hebrew-speak-
ing Zionist club in America, _the
Dr. Herzl Zion Club, in New
York, the original unit of Young
Judaea.
In 1924, he left the United
States for Palestine, where he de-
voted himself to welfare and
charity work and Hebrew schol-
arship. In 1940 he published
"Chashukei Kesses," commenta:
ries on the Books of Genesis and
Exodus.
Leaders of Jerusalem's cultural,
civic and political life, including
Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, partici-
pated in the funeral.
He is survived by Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver, another son, Dr.
Maxwell Silver; two daughters,
Mrs. Rose Matlaw and Mrs.
Samuel E. Liebow; 10 grand-
children and six great-grandchil-
dren.
