Ben S. Sidlow, Man of Learning,
Wit, Honored on 50th Birthday

On Jan. 5, personable, genial
and warmly-Jewish Ben S. Sid-
low will quietly mark the 50th
anniversary of his birth. Though
no formal celebration is planned,
the large host of friends he has
won for himself will wish him
well on his birthday.
He came to Detroit as a lad
38 years ago, attended Detroit
schools and has vivid memories
of his early experiences and trials
in the city. He became associated
with the late Herman Wetsman
and later with D. R. Stocker. For

a short period he was connected
in business with the late Isaac
Shetzer. Through these men he
was inspired with an especial and
deep interest in Congregation
Shaarey Zedek which he has re-
tained throughout his adult life.
Entering the congregation in
1932 he immediately sought to
render active service. A man of
energy and profound JewiAl feel-
ing he could not long remain
a spectator. lie served as a mem-
ber of the order and decorum
committee and became its chair-
man, holding that post for some
years. In 1936 he was elected
secretary of the Men's Club and
rendered great service in that
capacity for 10 years. He helped
bring the Men's Club to its pres-
ent position of one of the largest
organizations of its kind in the
Conservative movement.
No task was too humble and
Ben Sidlow was a familiar and
active figure at each of the many
forums and programs sponsored
by the club. During the war he
Showed intense zeal in the sale
of War Bonds. He devoted many
days and nights of incessant work
to this patriotic task. He won
a citation of the Treasury De-
partment and also received for-
mal recognition from the con-

gregation for his activity.
In 1941 he was elected a mem-
ber of the hoard of trustees of
the congiegation and has aided
in every undertaking of the :, yna-
gogue. Since 1945, he has been
seer: tary of the congregation.
He is also chairman of the house
committee and has been of in-

estimable help in making the
synagogue a center of varied and
constant Jewish activity. At the

The Society, functioning under
sponsorship of the National Jew-
