They Don't Inquire About- Your Religion in Israel
Freda Kirchwey, describing her "first glance" at Israel on her
latest trip, reported in the Nation of Nov. 27, states, in comparison
with her other visits which took place under British domination:
"This time I was not asked my religion. For the moment
the security -Officer stood as symbol and personification of the
independent state of Israel; _a sort of wingless Victory."
We could not ask for a greater tribute to the reborn State of
Israel in a world that suffers from so much bias.

An Anecdote About the Rising Jewish State
Newsweek recently carried the following interesting anecdote
about Israel and her ambitious leaders:
In Tel Aviv, Israelis were chuckling at a story about
Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan, who was trying to make the
ends. of his budget meet. It seems that Premier David Ben-
Gurion met an old friend on the street one day and asked what
he was doing. "Nothing," answered the friend, "nothing at all."
"Why, that's preposterous!" said the Premier. "A man as able
as you—to be idle. You should be in the government. Name a
job and it's yours! „."Well," said the friend, "I could use a
cabinet post." "Oh, I'm afraid that would be -difficult," said
Ben-Gurion. "You see, all the posts are filled. Shertok is For-
eign Minister. Zisling is Minister of Agriculture. Kaplan is
Minister of Finance, and so it goes." "All right," said the friend,
"so make me Minister of Air." "But there's no such post," ex-
claimed the Premier. "What would a Minister of Air do with-
out any aircraft?" The friend, gave him a long, shrewd look
and shrugged his shoulders. "So," he said, "what is Kaplan
doing?"
It was not so long ago when our Irish friends "kidded" us
about "the Jewish navy." They thought—and we believed them—
that it was an impossibility. Now, we have the navy—and also an
air force. There is a treasurer who is handicapped for lack of a
sufficient treasury, but Israel seems to be able to get along even
on deficits. Is it too rly to predict that some day there even will
be a surplus? Just gi. 2 Israel a chance to begin the State's economic
development and Arabs as well as Jews will flourish.

The 'Class Struggle' Within Zionism
If Jews have learned anything at all in the past year, it has been
to abandon fear over the ultimate results of Jewish efforts in
Israel. The Jewish state is a fact and can not be destroyed.
But there is ground for fear over the damage that may be
administered to Israel by the internal quarrels. The UPA contro-
versy is a sample of the troubles that are in store for Israel unless
the issues are solved. Another sample of possible trouble resulting
from internal controversies is in evidence in the economic sphere.
The newly published Bulletin of the Organization of General Zion-
ists is Israel, which just arrived from Tel Aviv, carries an item
under the heading "Socialists' No Socialism' " which threatens to
foment a "class struggle" within Zionist ranks. This item reads:
Illustrative of the confusion—possibly not entirely accidental—which
prevails abroad about conditions in Israel, is the following:
The noted American economist, Mr. Robert Nathan, stated in Phila-
delphia last month that "there will be no Socialism" in Israel. This bold
phophecy, made despite the fact that a Socialist State is the avowed ob-
jective of the Palestine Labour paries, Mapai and Mapam, is all the more
strange because it was made in the course of an address in support of the
AMPAL Company, which is appealing for additional capital. AMPAL is an
affiliated organization of the Histadrut,• which is dominated by the Israel
Labour parties. , Thus Mr. Nathan used an argument running counter to
the policy of the bodies governing AMPAL in order to encourage invest-
ments in that very company!
Mr. Dickenstein, director of AMPAL, must feel rather ruffled at being
placed by Mr. Nathan in the private investment sector, and Mr. Nathan
will surely himself be ruffled when his presumed ignorance of the origin
and purpose of AMPAL is explained to him.
If AMPAL were to retaliate with similar attacks on the newly-
planned ZOA investment corporation or on the Palestine Economic
Corporation, we would have chaos—to Israel's detriment. Fortu-
nately, AMPAL—whose constructive efforts are too well known to
need defense—is alder supervision of men who are showing better
judgment.
Meanwhile, however, we see the evidences of impending dan-
gers from internal conflicts unless party lines and 'class struggles are
eliminated in a period when Israel's security is at stake.

How Will YOU Celebrate New Year's Eve?
The civil New Year will be ushered in this year on Friday
night. It will be interesting to watch the reactions of our com-
munity to an event, annually ushered in with hilarity, that occurs
on the Sabbath.
Will it be a night of desecration or of dedication to faith?
Our Rabbis have a serious task ahead of them to secure co-
operation from our community in an effort to abandon a practice
which would call for defiance of a traditional practice of making
the Sabbath Eve a sacred occasion for home, synagogue and com-
munity.
A personal reminiscence is not out of order at this time. About
20 years ago, your Commentator had an unpleasant experience
when he pointed to the impropriety of a Hamtramck congregation
sponsoring a dance, in its synagogue social hall, on a Friday night.
A committee, headed by two patriarchal, bearded men, came to
protest against such an attitude. In the intervening years, our
people have drifted farther away from Sabbath observance. The
approaching New Year Eve will be a test of our attitudes and a
challenge to our self-respect.
Capacity Audience
Hears of Success
Of PWO Campaign
Before a capacity audience at
Masonic Temple auditorium last
Monday evening, leaders of the
Detroit Council of the Pioneer
Women's Organization reported
near-perfect results on the PWO
drive for $78,000 for the Child
Rescue Fund and the Moatzoth
Hapoaloth.
"Results of the annual donor
event were highly gratifying,
socially and financially," PWO
spokesmen said.
The donors and their guests
heard Ira Hirschmann, former
chairman of the War Refugee
Board, praise the efforts of the
Pioneer Women, particularly in
the work of rescuing children
from Europe and bringing them
to the healthy atmosphere of
Israel.
Hirschmann compared the
struggles of the Israelis of 1948
against the British with those of
the American settlers of 1776.
The audience responded en-
thusiastically to Hirschmann's
talk and to the recital of Cantor
Saul Meisels and dance artists
Delakova and Berk.
Members of Habonim aided in
the program with a procession
of the American and Israeli flags
to the platform.
