FACT THAT GOAL of 1948
Red Feather Drive is 11.2 per
cent higher than of '47 . .. and
that folks Nye to pitch in just
that much to insure success .. .
is basis for this story about Leon-
nard Simons, chairman of the
Commercial) - Professional Unit,
and his good friend, Harry Beck-
er, who is among the ad man's
list of prospects.
WHEN HARRY' sent $1,000
check for same amount as last
year, Leonard wrote him letter
saying; "Thank you, but where
is that 11.2 per cent increase?"
. . . The letter somehow got into
hands of Harry's auditors in-
stead of him personally .. . and
auditors will be auditors . . . so
back it went, along with the
cryptic comment, "You are a
nudnick."
NOT BEING TOO SURE what
a "nudnick" was, Leonard went
on a research campaign . .. and
through aid of local Jewish au-
thorities on the matter of such
wordage, discovered that no mat-
ter how you slice it, a "nudnick"
is a pest • . . He returned the
original correspondence to Harry.
with the added note, "When you
call me a "nudnick" in relation
to my work with the Community
Chest, I consider it a compliment.
Where is that 11.2 per cent in-
crease?"
HARRY SENT BACK the re-
ply . . .„"I am enclosing herewith
additional check to the Commu-
nity Chest in the amount of $212,
as you requested, which is the
cost to me for you to find out
wliat the word `Nudnick' means.
Your education is expensive—
but I admire your community ef-
forts."

KEEPING TIME WITH the
blood-boiling rhythm along the

hoof-hoisting prowess in rhumba
contests held, last week, at local
niteries . . . Gloria and Eddie
Epstein won cups for their very
neat medium beat, at Sid's Cafe
. . . Mrs. Yetta (Nosanchuk)
Moses took a trophy for a torrid
fast tempo, executed with Julius
Gonzelus, at the Bowery • .
while back at the table, hubby,
Lou Moses, proudly murmured
"That's my wife!"

CHILDREN'S DEPT. . . . Rob-
ert Lewis, young man of six
years, was told, for the third
time, to go and wash his hands
for dinner . . . He looked over
his hands, cocked his curly-
topped head to one side . .. and
returned the verdict, "Mother,
they aren't really dirty—just
kinda blurred."

ABE KASLE has accepted
chairmanship of a committee to
work out some way of providing
information on • all independent
fund-raising campaigns . . . and
there sure are pu-lenty round
the country! . . . Many are among
the biggest money making
rackets in the world! . . . Much
pressure is being put on the
Jewish Welfare Federation to
strengthen this service to the
community . . . and Kasle is just
the man to lead the researching
. . . Being the philanthropist that
he is, Abe's own tally sheet of
independent campaigns personal-
ly contributed to is longer than
the trip on a blow boat to China
. . . His first act as chairman was
to send in that list . . . and find
out which groups were using his
money to buy shoelaces for bare-
footed aborigines.

Plans for Trade School for
Boys Get Industries' Support

After 24 years of labors devoted
to an effort to establish a trade
school for young men, Louis
Moser was given strong encour-
agement at a luncheon meeting
at the Old Wayne Club on Nov.
18 at which some of Michigan's
most prominent industrialists
were present. -
Judge D. J.-Healy of the Wayne
County Probate Court, who pre-
sided at the meeting, pointed out
that this project is vital to in-
dustry and deserves encourage-
ment. He expressed the hope that
manufacturers will provide the
Scrap necessary for the making
of tools and supplies.
The principal speaker at the
luncheon, the Rev. Walton E. Cole
of the First Congregational
Church, recalled that he first co-
operated with Mr. Moser in To-
ledo, in 1931, and that he con-
sidered his effort of great
importance to the community. He
described the need for "training
the hand" and declared that "Mr.
Moser has the skill to impart
good citizenship and to create a
can-how in addition to a know-
how in students."
Douglas B. Crane, attorney,
spoke in support of the project.
Others who participated in the
discussion were John L. Lovett,
executive secretary of the Manu-

LONDON (JTA) — Defense
Minister V. A. Alexander, ad-
dressing the annual reunion of
the League of Jewish Ex-Service-
men, pointed out that 1,000,000

Allies and urged that "Jewry,
which has always rendered great

must be ready to defend peace
with justice, which is impossible
without freedom."

facturers Association; Mr. Emer-
ick of the U. S. Radiator Co. and
the Rotary Clubs; Frederick E.
Searle, who for 29 years was
director of the Ford Trade
School; Leonard Kasle of Kasle
Steel Corporation, and many
others. There were more than 35
industrial executives at the meet-
ing.
Mr. Moser described his efforts
which he first began in 1925. He
said that he could provide for 25
students at his plant at 6535 Rus-
sell. In addition to elementary
students from the age of 18 he
said that he can provide for ad-
vanced students. Those who are
enrolled work with him as part-
ners in his non-profit industry.
"We aim to create the work
habit," he declared.
Mr. Kasle urged that industries
should assist in this undertaking
and that whenever possible they
should advance cash on supplies
to be manufactured under the
Moser plan.
