Joshua's Military Skill
Told in Fine Biography

Rogers MacVeagh and Thomas point referred to Joshua as "dis-

C. Costain, co-authors of "Josh- mayed" and "affrighted." They

ua," a biography, published by
Doubleday & Co., 14 W. 49th St.,
New York 20, approach their
subject in a unique and interest-
ing way. In addition to their
psychological, social and military
study of the great Biblical char-
acter, they included in their
book the text of the Book of
Joshua, thus enabling the read-
ers to compare their biographical
data with the original Bible story
on which their outline is based.
While they have followed the
Old Testament story, the authors
have elaborated on it with geo-
graphical data and by referring
to modern events paralleling the
battle for Canaan and the event-
ual settlement of Israel in Pal-
estine. There are interesting
comments in the book on Josh-
ua's master and predecessor and
leader in Israel, Moses, on the
battle for Jericho and the fall
of Jericho's walls, on Rahab and
the spies, Achan's stoning and
Joshua's master strokes as a
military leader.

In view of the latest oc-
currences in Israel, this bio-
graphy assumes added signifi-
cance because of the excellent
of
geographical''` fo
Israel's- battle r for the Promised
Land. There are . parallel situ-
ations which will give the read-
er an idea of the comparable
struggle for a homeland 3,500
years ago with the battle for
Israel's freedom today.
Naturally, there can not be
total agreement with the authors
of "Joshua" because of their in-

terpretations of the origin of the
Jewish people, their description
of the portrait they visualize of
Moses and their sociological
resumes. They refer to the
Semitic strain as "intellectual,
keen-witted, . humorous, sensu-
ous, acquisitive: the unchanging
Jew," and state that "it could
without a doubt stand as a por-
trait of Moses." Their ideas of
the Israelites may not be al-
together to our liking. But, the
tribute in "Joshua" both to the
great military leader . and to his
followers is superb. They write,
in tribute to Joshua's men:

"The victories they won are
almost without exception de-
scribed as miracles. The pur-
pose of this narrative is to de-
fine these as miracles of in-
spired leadership rather than
manifestation of Divine help,
and even there the whole of
the credit falls on the shoulders
of their leaders . .. Rebellious
at times, stiff-necked always,
prone to murmur and dispute,
avid for plunder, but when
they had their . orders they
carried them out as swiftly
and surely as any band of
fighting men the world has
ever seen."

MacVeagh and Costain dis-
agree with Josephus who at one

deny it and maintain that Joshua
always was the fearless and
brave man.
The concluding tribute
to
Joshua in this fine biography is
one of the most magnificent ever
penned to any man. He is re-
ferred to as strong, courageous,
a keeper of treaties, upholder of
the law, farsighted, without jeal-
ousy or vainglory, had no
thought for personal gains, had
a poet's powers • to uplift - the
minds of men, etc. This is the
man whose "grave, like that of
Moses, no man has found."

Granados' Birth of
Israel' Receiving
Commendations

"The Birth of Israel: The
Drama As I - Saw It," Dr. Jorge
Garcia-Granados' very great book
on Palestine; published by Knopf,
is receiving countrywide corn-

course throughout his book and
from the very beginning prophe-
sied that the Jewish State would
be established and would suc-
ceed.
Already reviewed in The Jew-
ish News Rosh Hashanah edition
by the eminent author, Maurice
Samuel, "The Birth of Israel" is
given this added commendation
out of recognition of an unusu-
ally important book on the in-
ternational issue of Israel which
is gathering widespread interest
and endorsement in all quarters.

MUNICH (JTA)—Ninety per-
cent of the Jews in the U. S.
zone of Germany who reside in
DP camps have applied for emi-
gration to Israel, it was an-
nounced at the Israeli mission's
central registration bureau. The

of the camps in the American
zone wishing to emigrate to Is-
rael is 85 percent.

VIENNA, (JTA) — Reliable
sources said that Adolph Eich-
mann, notorious Gestapo leader
who, as Hitler's "expert" on Jew-
ish affairs, directed th,e extermi-
nation of more than 6,000,000
Jews in Europe, has appeared in
Austria where he is directing the
revival of neo-Nazi activities. Al-
though widely-circulated, the re-
port has not been officially con-
firmed.
Last June Eichmann was said
to have been residing in Egypt
recruiting Nazis there to fight
with the Arabs against the Jews
in Palestine. A native of the for-
mer German settlement of Sar-
ona, near Tel Aviv, which has
been renamed "Hakiryah" and is
now the seat of the Provisional
Government of Israel, Eichmann
speaks Hebrew and Yiddish. This
qualified him in Hitler's eyes as a
"specialist" on Jewish matters.
During his service with the Ges-
tapo he played an important role
in bringing together the ex-Mufti
of Jerusalem with top Nazi
leaders.

As a member of UNSCOP; as
one of the bravest fighters for
Jewish freedom, as Guatemalan
representative at the UN, Dr.
Granados has earned the grati-
tude of Jewry. His book is the
personal account of a great ex-
perience. He had met, in and
out of Palestine, with Jewish and
Arab leaders, with spokesmen
for friendly and unfriendly gov-
ernments concerned with the
Palestine issue. He emerged a
stronger friend of Israel's cause
as time progressed.
