To Speak Oct. 28
For UHS Alumni

"Jewish Education of Today"
will be the subject of a talk by
Dr. Samuel M. Blumenfield, dean
of the College of Jewish Studies
of Chicago, at a meeting at North-
west Synagogue Thursday eve-
ning, Oct. 28.
The gathering is being spon-
sored by the Alumni Association
of the United Hebrew Schools as
its contribution to the 22nd an-
nual education month project ob-
served by the schools.
All young people, members of
youth groups and parents are in-
vited to attend. A public forum
will follow.
Allan L. Weston is president
of the Alumni Association. Other
officers are: Arthur Migdal, vice-
president; Esther Charnas, rec-
ording secretary; Bessie Kramer
Berris, corresponding secretary;
Herbert Fortgang, treasurer; and
Ruben Isaacs and Max Chomsky,
associate chairmen of the execu-
tive committee.

Brandeis University
Classes Open Oct. 20;
Dr. Sachar Installed

BOSTON (JTA)—Brandeis Uni-
versity, the first Jewish-spon-
sored non-sectarian institution of
higher learning in the United
States; was inaugurated Oct. 8 at
impressive ceremonies in Sym-
phony Hall here, during which
Dr. Abram Leon Sachar was in-
stalled as . first president of the
University.
More than 3,000 guests and
delegates from 166 American and
18 foreign colleges and univer-
sities attended the academic cere-
monies.4'Dr. Sachar was inducted
by George Alpert, president of
the board of trustees of the uni-
versity-. The inaugural address
was delivered by Dr. Arthur H.
Compton, chancellor of Washing- .
ton University. Eliahu Epstein,
Israeli envoy to the United States,
expressed the hope that many fu-
ture graduates of Brandeis Uni-
versity would bring thei -2 knowl-
edge to Israel.
The academic year will get
under way on Oct. 14 when the
120 members of the pilot fresh-
man class register. Classes will
begin Oct. 20. Twenty-five per-
cent of the freshmen are receiv-
ing scholarships from the uni-
versity. The tuition charge is
$500 a year. Funds for the uni-
versity were raised by the Bran-
deis Foundation, Inc., of Boston.

NEW SHOLEM ALEICHEM

The new Sholem Aleichem In-
stitute and Center, located on
Dexter and Glendale, is under
construction and it is planned to
have the cornerstone laying cere-
mony at a public event, possibly
on Oct. 24.
Louis Redstone, architect of
the new center, has designed a
building suitable for the varied
branches of cultural and educa-
tional activities of the Sholem
Aleichem Institute. It has five
large, airy classrooms, a modern
auditorium with a suitable stage,
a library, a business office, a mod-
ern kitchen and a large land-
scaped playground for the stu-
dents.

broaden the scope of the Sholern
Aleichem Institute and to in-
