Histadrut Launches Drive
For Israel Polk Hospital

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A nation-
wide drive to raise $1,500,000
during the next six months to
erect a Polio Institute in Pales-
tine was launched by the His-
tadruth. Opening of the campaign
was made known by Dr. Joseph
Mayer, chief medical officer of
the Israeli Army, who is now in
this country.
Pointing out that there is not
at present a, single polio hospital
in the entire Middle East, Dr.
Mayer said the purpose of the
drive was to set up a hospital
which would serve the residents
of the Middle East on a non-
sectarian basis. The CIO already
has pledged $150,000 to the drive
for the erection of a wing in
honor of Philip Murray, its presi-
dent, while a similar amount has
been contributed by a group of
individuals.
Meanwhile, it was revealed
here today that employees of
several hat-manufacturing firms
in this area are working at an
accelerated pace to kprovide 100,000
caps to the Israeli Ariny. The
workers are contributing their
labor free of charge while em-
ployers have donated the use of
their factories as well as material.

Condemn Anti- Semitism Charge
Against Prosecutor McNally
Editor, The Jewish News:
Because of the many inquiries
being made concerning the basis
for the pamphlets and reprints
from a neighborhood newspaper
of an abusive nature attacking
Prosecutor James N. McNally
recently circulated in Jewish
neighborhoods, we feel compelled
to • protest the injection of the
charge of anti-Semitism into an
election campaign, — particularly
when it comes from non-Jews.
It is a shameful political trick
which should never be counten-
anced in any election campaign.
It is the type of activity resorted
to by small minds and in this case
it is motivated by a desire to
strike at the Prosecuting Attor-
ney more than at the man him-
self.
We who have been serving on
his staff can testify that in ap-
pointing the four of us, Mr. Mc-
Nally has named as many assist-
ants of the Jewish faith as any
former prosecutor and he has
shown us every consideration
possible during the course of his
term in office. From our observa-
tion of him, we feel he has
repeatedly shown an impartial
and liberal attitude in all matters
involoving members of minority
groups. We can testify further
that he has tried to do his duty
in an efficient and energetic man-
ner yet tempered with fairness at
all times.
All we can do is repeat that Mr.
McNally is a friend of the Jewish
people and regards them as he

does all good citizens in the com-
munity. We trust that any further
personal attacks made against
him will be recognized by our
people as being unworthy of con-
sideration.
Sincerely yours,

Turkish Jews Leaving
For Israel in Quantity

ISTANBUL, (JTA) — The rate
of emigration of Israel-bound
Turkish Jews has reached record
proportions in recent weeks. En-
tire family groups, instead of just
youthful pioneers, are leaving
Izmir, Edirne and Canakkale for
Tel Aviv or Haifa.
In Istanbul the number of
prospective immigrants has be-
come so great that many Jews
register in the smaller provincial
cities in order to avoid a lengthy
delay in passport application pro-
cessing. Many other Jews leave
for Marseilles and Naples where
they embark for Israeli ports.

To

MY JEWISH

FRIENDS

To the Jewish

people everywhere, whose undying
struggle to re-establish your homeland in Palestine has
finally been rewarded, I want to extend my sincere hope
that the New Year may witness greater and ever greater

progress in the development of the State of Israel.

Gerald K. O'Brien

Candidate for re-election as

Prosecuting Attorney
Democrat

One of my most cherished memories is my experience at Lake Success, where,
with Jewish and Christian Lawyers and Judges from all parts of the Country,

we pleaded with the United States Delegation to approve the partition of Pales-
tine and recognize the State of Israel. We shared in your exaltation when
Israel was actually born.

But the struggle is only beginning. A vast job remains to be done, at home
if Israel shall achieve its historic role. All - right-minded people
must aid in this task.

and abroad,

It. is my fervent hope that the Jewish year 5709 will see the State of Israel
take its rightful place in the Family of Democratic Nations.

Sincerely yours,

GERALD K. O'BRIEN
