Detroit Jews Ask
Truman's Support
In Israel's Behalf

Responding to the call' issued
by the Zionist Council of De-
troit, many of Detroit's rabbis
made appeals to their congrega-
tions during Rosh Hashanah urg-
ing them to communicate with
President Truman and to urge
him to act against Secretary of
State Marshall's stand in support
of the unacceptable Bernadotte
report. President Truman is be-
ing urged to adhere to estab-
lished policy and to lend all aid
to Israel in accordance with the
UN decisions.
Sidney. Shevitz, president of
the Zionist Council, stated that
other action is planned and that
there are negotiations for radio
programs to. help clarify the Jew-
ish position and Israel's needs.

Vocational Service Takes Steps
To Revise Personnel Practices

.

Four major changes have al-
ready been effected in the op-
eration of the Jewish Vocational
Service, since the formation of a
joint committee of the JVS and
the Jewish Welfare Federation
to review the operation of the
agency.
According to a preliminary
statement, filed by the commit-
tee last week as an interim re-
port, the steps taken to improve
the level of the agency operation
include:
1. Action to create, a case com-
mittee which will deal with
agency policy and will have final
responsibility to the JVS board
of directors.
2. Steps to strengthen the board
by adding to the board- people
displaying special interest in the
agency.
3. Action to increase frequency

-

of board meetings; and
4. Action to complete without
delay the revision of the agency's
code of personnel practices.
The report covers preliminary
observations of the committee,
including service statistics which
reveal an upward trend in both
the placement and counseling
areas of the agency service since
it was first organized in 1942.
The committee includes Mil-
ton M. Maddin, chairman, and
William Avrunin, secretary, Mrs.
Stanley Fleischaker, Samuel S.
Greenberg, William Isenberg,
Hoke Levin, Dr. Samuel Levin,
Milton K. Mahler, Isidore Sobe-
loff, David Welling and Mrs. Mel-
ville S. Welt.
