Hilldring Urges Detroit Jews To Mobilize Forces for Israel THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, October 8, 1948 - Detroit Jews Ask Truman's Support In Israel's Behalf Responding to the call' issued by the Zionist Council of De- troit, many of Detroit's rabbis made appeals to their congrega- tions during Rosh Hashanah urg- ing them to communicate with President Truman and to urge him to act against Secretary of State Marshall's stand in support of the unacceptable Bernadotte report. President Truman is be- ing urged to adhere to estab- lished policy and to lend all aid to Israel in accordance with the UN decisions. Sidney. Shevitz, president of the Zionist Council, stated that other action is planned and that there are negotiations for radio programs to. help clarify the Jew- ish position and Israel's needs. MAJ.-GEN. Four major changes have al- ready been effected in the op- eration of the Jewish Vocational Service, since the formation of a joint committee of the JVS and the Jewish Welfare Federation to review the operation of the agency. According to a preliminary statement, filed by the commit- tee last week as an interim re- port, the steps taken to improve the level of the agency operation include: 1. Action to create, a case com- mittee which will deal with agency policy and will have final responsibility to the JVS board of directors. 2. Steps to strengthen the board by adding to the board- people displaying special interest in the agency. 3. Action to increase frequency - of board meetings; and 4. Action to complete without delay the revision of the agency's code of personnel practices. The report covers preliminary observations of the committee, including service statistics which reveal an upward trend in both the placement and counseling areas of the agency service since it was first organized in 1942.
