A

Owens' Epic Figh
Against Prejudice

GENEVA, (JTA) — Emphasiz-
ing that Jews in Moslem coun-
tries are being terrorized and
that their situation must be dealt
with immediately, Alexander
Easterman, political secretary of
the World Jewish Congress, pro-
tested against postponing the
discussion of the question of hu-
man rights by the UN Economic
and Social Council now meeting
here.
This delay, Easterman told a
press conference, means that
complaints of Jewish organiza-
tions about the mistreatment of
Jews in Arab countries would
not come up for discussion be-
fore the next meeting of the Eco-
nomic and Social Council in Feb-
wary.
During the past few months,
Easterman declared, hundreds of
Jews have been murdered and
injured in mob attacks in Egypt.
"Thousands have been imprison-
ed there, with the connivance
and sometimes approval and en-
couragement of the Egyptian
Government," he added. "In ad-
dition, Jewish property of great
value has been confiscated by the
Egyptian authorities." All. this,
he said, has been kept secret by
the stringent censorship regula-
tions imposed by the • Egyptian
Government.

No rights
Some years ago, in the Polish
Parliament, there was a certain
Dr. Izchaki, a Jew. He aligned
himself with the lefts in the
Polish parliament.
"Why do you align yourself
with the lefts?" he was asked.
"Well," said the good doctor,
"don't you know, we Jews have
no rights."

Guessed His Age
Now that we are in the midst
of a political campaign, maybe
we should tell this story. They
say it once happened on the East
Side. A politician had risen and
in the not infrequent style of
political orators had indulged in
a lot of buncombe.
After he was finished speak-
ing, a Jew got up and said, "I
bet I can tell you how old you
are."
"How old am I?" asked the
politician.
"You are 42 years old."
"That's right," said the orator.
"How did you know?"
"Well, I have a cousin who is
21 and you are twice as big an
idiot as he."

Prophecy
A woman came to a rabbi,
who was known for his proph-
etic powers, to inquire about the
return of her husband. On arriv-
ing at the rabbi's office, she sent
in a note via the sexton, asking
for the rabbi's prognostication.
The rabbi sent hack word
through -the sexton, that her hus-
band would shortly return. The
sexton handed the. woman the
note, saying, "The rabbi says
that your husband will return,
but I will -tell you, he won't."
"How can You say that?" said
the woman. "The rabbi saw my
note and has given me his an-
swer."
"Yes," said the sexton, "the
rabbi saw your note, but I saw
you."

Prohibition Orator
The veteran Jewish Congress-
man, Emanuel Celler of Brook-
lyn, told this story about a pro-
hibitionist orator who invaded
his district some years ago, when
the prohibition question was
very much alive.
The prohibitionist orator lec-
tured with two bottles of liquids

before him. In one bottle was
water and in the second, alcohol.
The prohibitionist took some
worms and put them in water,
and the worms swam about.
Then he took out the worms
and put them in the bottle of
alcohol and immediately the
worms died.
The prohibitionist looked up
gleefully to his audience. "What
interpretation do you draw from
this experiment?" shouted the
orator.
"I know," called out a man
from the audience. "If you've
got worms, take alcohol."

every Tuesday lectured in a town
adjacent to that city'vvas in the
habit of coming every Monday
to a rich man of the town to ask
for the loan of $100. On the day
following the lecture, the "mag-
gid," with cloeklike regularity
would return to the rich man the
money he had borrowed.•
The rich Jew couldn't under-
stand it, The "maggid" never
held the money for more than
24 hours. Of what use could the
money be to him and moreover
how was it he alWays'needed the
same amount?
The rich man pondered and
pondered and finally boldly
asked the "maggid," whom he
greatly respected, why he regu-
larly borrowed the money. '
"It's very simple," said the
maggid, "I have found I can make
a better speech when I have $100
in my pocket."

Jesse Owens, thunderbolt of the
1936 Olympics, was in New York
with promoter Abe Saperstein.
Jesse serves as an assistant for
Abe in his Negro baseball and
basketball exploitations. They-
were here to hypo the gate at the
Yankee Stadium and the Polo
Grounds in two Saperstein base-
ball ventures. • Owens renewed ac-
quaintance with Marty Glickman,
Station WHN sportscaster, who
was a sprinter team-mate of Jes-
se's in the 1936 Games.
In those games, Dean Cromwell,
present Olympic head coach, was
in charge of the sprinters. He has
been under fire, recently, for anti-
Negro and anti-Semitic express-
ions. At any rate, he told his six
sprinters, including Owens, Met-
calfe, Glickman, Stoller, , Wycoff
and Draper that the *four best
times . in trials held in Berlin
would decide the four men who
would run the U.S.A. 400-yard-
relay-race- The two colored -boys,
Owens and Metcalfe, qualified, as
did the two Jewish runners, Glick-
man and Stoller. Cromwell, how-
ever, named Owens, Metcalfe, Wy-
coff and Draper as his sprint
quartet. Owens immediately hit
the ceiling, He threatened not to
run unless Cromwell put Stoller
and Glickman on the club. Crom-
well refused and the team was
in a dither. Only three men Met-
calfe, Wycoff and Draper were
available with Owens refusing to
race. Glickman, touched by Jesse's
defense, pleaded with Owens to
run, if only for Uncle Sam. Owens
couldn't refuse to represent his
country despite the circumstances
and anchored our team to victory.
Glickman told the story to Sa-
perstein when he and Jesse were
interviewed by Marty over WHN.
Abe says that apparently Owens
is still Glickman's great sport idol.
Marty told Saperstein that the
former Ohio State dash man was
the greatest sprinter of all time
and his form on the cinders was
perfection. Abe takes advantage
of Owens' fine condition. He has
him running exhibitions against
horses, and humans are given dis-
tance handicaps. Jesse tells us he
still runs the 100-yard dash in 9.7.
Not bad for a man approaching
the 40-year mark. A New York
sport columnist took offense at
Saperstein's racing Owens against
a horse. Thought it was undigni-
fied. Saperstein says he doesn't
know what the columnist makes
a year, but Jesse has realized over
$20:000 in one year, and rarely
goes under $10,000 every year un-
der the Jewish promoters aegis.
