Out of the Rat Holes
When American boys were fighting from -the' foxholes. char-
acters such as Allen Zoll, who has now emerged as the surreptitious
trustee and brains of a new ostensibly patriotic organization, called
the National Council of American Education, were fighting from the
ratholes of native Fascism in Yorkville and similar areas. They were
loud-mouthed propagandists for Fascism, strictly Rome-Berlin-
Madrid vintage, and scrofulous spreaders of hate amidst the hetero-
geneous American citizenry. They were silenced by America's entry
into war, 'and are now again emerging into the limelight, feeding
on Americans' wariness of Communism. -
Celebrated Americans have joined this Council of American
Education whose professed objective is the extirpation of Marxist
doctrine from American textbooks. American educators have reason
to worry over this professed objective which attempts to muzzle all
liberal and dissident scholars. But we are not concerned, at the
moment, with the professed objectives of the new organization.
We are far more , concerned with its hidden objectives. With a
person like Allen Zoll, admirer of Father Co5ughlin and associate of
the top names in American Fascism, directing the organization be-
hind the scene; there is little doubt that this organization, ostensibly
dedicated to fight totalitarianism, will serve as a vehicle for the pro-
motion of a special brand of totalitariani,sm.
Friends for Democracy, headed by Dr. L. M. Birkheada have
informed the celebrated Americans who have unwittingly lent their
names to the new organization about Zoll's record.
This columnist remembers Zoll from the Yorkville clays and
from the days when he led pickets against radio station WMCA
which refused to broadcast Fuehrer Coughlin speeches from Royal
Oak. We find that Zoll is not alone. Many patriotic groups should
carefully screen their lists for these Latter Day Saints, veterans of
Yorkville's rat holes.
