Shows Need for Jewish State
Editor, The Jewish News:
Fey/ American Jews realize the
necessity for a national Jewish
State. I feel justified in saying
this, for I had the doubtful privil-
ege as a student at Louisiana
State University to hear Dr. El-
mer Berger of the Council for
Judaism denounce Zionism and a
Jewish State. His anti-Zionist
feelings stem from an unwarrant-
ed fear of being called un-Ameri-
can. His peculiar brand of Jew-
ish self-hatred is luckily in the
political and spiritual fruitfulness
minority.
Even the majority of Jews who
pay yearly dues to the ZOA and
other organizations fail to com-
prehend the real meaning of a
Jewish State.
In the Diaspora, especially in
America, the Jew is allowed Ma-
terial fruitfulness, but cultural,
is denied. The saving of Euro-
pean Jews therefore is insuffi-
cient—there must be national re-
habilitation for them.
I mean by material fruitfulness
—economic security; by cultural
fruitfulness—to allow Jewish cul-
ture to evolutionize on "-s prop-
er foundations, away from outside
and opposite tendencies; by poli-
tical fruitfulness — to create a
state with a Jewish majority as
opposed to Diaspora minority
status; by spiritual fretfulness—
to provide and nurture "Am
Yisroel" with a truly religious
home.
We must set all these factors
in their proper perspective. Only
then will we be able to show the
advantages of a Jewish nation
among the nations of the earth.
"For out of ZiOn shall go forth
the Law and the word of the
Lord from Jerusalem" (Micah
IV:2).

An Irgun Defender
Editor, The Jewish News:
It is noted with regret that la-
bor Zionists propose to establish
a picketing front at Irgun affairs
in Detroit. Betar believes that
there are better methods to help
Israel. Cooperation, not dissension,
is the commandment of the hour.
Even so, there is no reason why
we cannot agree to disagree in a
democratic way. •
We invite our labor friends 'to
the public forum. If truth is what
they are after, what better me-
dium is there of getting at it than
through public discussion? Is not
this more democratic than picket-
ing?
Sincerely,
B. ROSENBERG.
Editor's Note: Mr. Rosenberg
fails to state that Irgun stands
condemned and discredited not
only by labor Zionists but by
ALL Zionists—through, statements
by Israeli government officials
and the Jewish Agency. The is-
sue today is not one of debate but
of enforcing discipline and ruling
out of Jewish life those who seek
internally to destroy the Jewish
State.
