Jews on Vacation
Gentiles Create Own 'Ghettoes'
By DAVID SCHWARTZ
'(Copyright, '1948, Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, Inc.)
Mr. Feder looked up from his
paper. "I see," he said to Mr.
Abelson, who was rooming with
the Feders for the summer, "that
these summer resort ads no long-
er use the term 'Restricted.' " .
"Does that mean that anti-
Semitism is decreasing?" quer-
ied Mr. Abelson.
"No, I am afraid it isn't that,"
said Mr. Feder. "Now, the ads
use the phrase "Near Protestant
and Catholic Churches" which
is another way of saying that it
is a non-Jewish community and
Jews are not wanted."
"Why are you reading the re-
sort ads?" interrupted Mrs. Fed-
er. "We have our cottage now,
haven't we, so why •read them
now? Better find me a frame for
this picture."
"You know," said Mr. Abel-
son, ignoring Mrs. Feder's inter-
ruption, "I sometimes wonder
why it is that Gentiles are so
clannish, why do they like to
live in ghettoes."
"Haven't you got it a little
twisted?" Mr. Feder replied, "It's
the Jews who live in ghettoes,
not the Gentiles."
"That's all propaganda,"
said Mr. Abelson. "Actually,
. it's the Gentiles who live in
ghettoes. Do you see any signs
on Jewish hotels restricting
Gentiles? The Jewish hotels
never turn away the Gentiles.
It's quite the opposite."
"Maybe," said Mr. Abelson,
-*Palestine will help the situa-
tion."
"Well," said Mr. Abelson,
w many Jews will probably go to
Palestine for . their vacation. It's
* very nice place for vacations.
You know, Switzerland gets
*bout half' of its revenue from
people who go there for vaca-
tions. Palestine has as many and
31nore attractions than Switzer-
land."
"You know," said Mr. Feder,.
4 1 heard ..that when -Jews began
tit boycott certain Canadian sum-
mer resorts because of anti-
Semitism, that the Canadians
pleaded with the Jews to return.
Maybe, if many Jews go to Pal-
estine on vacations, you may find
the same thing happening in
America."
"No, I wasn't thinking exact-
ly of that," said Mr. Abelson,"
"I was thinking of something
that Herd said in his novel
about Palestine, 'Altneuland.'
One of the characters says to a
Christian visitor, 'Well, you
don't notice any more, the be-
jewelled Jewish women about
whom you always used to com-
plain. 'Herzl meant,' Mr. Abel-
son explained, 'that a Gentile
and even Jews always notice
the objectionable Jews. In the
Jewish state, things take their
proper setting. We may notice
the objectionable ones, but we
also notice the good ones.
You've got to have the right
setting, the right frame to see
the picture right."
You see," Mrs. Feder threw
herself into the conversation,
"What have I been telling you?
The frame is always as impor-
tant as the picture. That's been
the trouble with the Jews
through the centuries. The world
has never been able to see the
Jewish picture in the right
frame. Certainly, some Gentiles
have been as gaudy and objec-
tionable as some ,Jews. Why is it
you never hear that any of these
people are vulgar? It's only in
the Jew that any vulgarity is
noted as a national trait. Let
any Jew be vulgar, and immedi-
ately the word Jew is associated
with it. In the Jewish state, as
Mr. Abelson said, all things will
take their proper setting. You
may notice the vulgarity, but
you also notice the other things
and you do not associate the evil,
but rather the good, with the
term Jew."
"Well," said Mr. Feder, "get
that frame you want for the
picture."
Mrs. Feder smiled.
