Guillermo Griffel of • Guate-
mala, who visited in Detroit last
week, told of the friendly efforts
by • Guatemalan officials, e speci-
ally its president, to establish
good relations with Jews. Griffel,
who is Jewish, is a close friend
of Mr. and Mrs. William Jacob,
1725 Chicago Blvd. He stated:
Guatemala is the core of dem
ocracy in Central America. It is
constantly extending its heart
and helping hands to Jewish peo-
ple all over the world. The un-
tiring and unselfish efforts of its
beloved President Juan Jose
Arevalo have been the main stay
in these accomplishments.
Dr. Arevalo became president
three years ago in the first pop-
ular election in the country since
its independence was proclaimed
in 1821.
His benefits to mankind are
numerous. During his tenure of
office he has developed a great
program in his country, creating
social security for the labor peo-
ple and the Indians who worked
the farms, developing housing
projects, building hospitals and
schools and introducing a com-
plete system of sanitation.
President Arevalo continues to
lend his support toward the bet-
terment of • mankind, not only
from within the environs of his
country but also the harassed
minorities from without.
When the present trials and
tribulations of the Jewish people
are history, President Arevalo's
name will live forever therein,
as having contributed largely to
the independency of IsraeL Un-
der,his able guidance, Guatemala
was among the first countries to
recognize the new state, and in
so doing has aided and abetted
the righteous cause of the Jew-
ish people.
