PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (JTA)—The proposed draft of '
the 1948 Democratic convention platform went before
the full 108-man resolutions committee Tuesday after- -
noon with a Palestine plank toughened somewhat from
the State Department version presented to the subcom-
mittee. The wording was certain to pass the full corn-
rnittee to go to the convention floor, with the White
House making a last minute request for further strength-
ening of the plank.
Proponents of a strong plank on Israel are generally
satisfied with the results of the subcommittee in revising
wliat the State Department wanted in the way of a
Democratic policy statement on the Middle East crisis.
Some pro-Israel spokesmen felt that the plank needs
more toughening to make it specific enough for imple-
mentation purposes.
The seven-man sub group earlier approved a draft
stating, "We look forward to extending full and prompt
recognition to the permanent government of Israel as
soon as it is established." The 18-main subcommittee,
after a fight by Rep. Emmanuel Celler of New York,
changed 'the wording to read: "We favor full recognition
to the State of Israel."
The State Department opposed calling for flat de jure
recognition on the grounds that such recognition could
not be extended to a provisional government. Zionist
circles have maintained that the Israel government is in
• fact permanent but also point out that precedence exists
in United States diplomacy for de jure recognition to
provisional governments.
The only other change effected by supporters of the
State of Israel was over the arms embargo plank. This
plank reads as follows: "We favor the revision of the
arms embargo to accord to the State of Israel the right of
self defense: - We pledge ourselves to work for the modi-
fication of any resolution of the United Nations to the
extent that it May prevent any such revision."
The United Nations reference is to the remiest for
non-shipment of arms requested by the international
organization during the Palestine fighting. It is under-
stood that the UN resolution affected only the truce
period. Now that the truce 'has been suspended it, is be-
lieved no UN, prohibition on arms shipments exists.

A Lost Generation
Thousands of Jewish children-who were "sheltered" by Christian
families during the Hitler days have become totally alienated from
Jews and Judaism. . . . The great majority of them have imbibed all
the anti-Jewish prejudices of their protectors . . . When a survey is
made of this situation it will constitute a monument of shame to our
Christian friends who could not desist from making religious capital
of the Jewish tragedy. . . . About two years ago the Chief Rabbi of
Palestine. Dr. Herzog, was received by the Pope in Rome . . . Press
reports then said the two religious leaders diScussed the fate of those
Jewish children. . . . Yet responsible Jewish religious bodies here
and in Europe encountered a woeful lack of coop_eration from local
priests having custody of the children . . . And this despite the fact
that the Pope was said to have evinced a deep interest in the message
brought to him by Rabbi Herzog. ... In- Poland alone there are. over
5,000 such converted children .
An -Odd Story
D. L. Meckler,, editor-in-chief of the Jewish Morning Journal,
Yiddish daily, tells the story how a German youth with.a beard and
peoth recently came to Rabbi Shapiro, head of the JDC religious
department at Munich, with d request that he be converted to Juda-
ism. . . . The surprised rabbi looked at the youth, who from all
appearances seemed Jewish ... The young man told him in a Galician
Yiddish that his parents lived on the outskirts of Berlin when Hitler
rose to power . . . His father was a Jew, the mother a Christian .. .
The mother became a Nazi and informed against her husband, who
was liquidated. . . . When the mother learned that her son was
planning to escape to a neutral country, she betrayed him to the
Nazis, who threw him into a camp. . . . When the war ended the
troubled youth was toying with the idea of telling the story about his
mother to the officials. ... But he could not get himself to inform
against her realizing she might perhaps receive a death sentence . •
Instead he joined a religious Kibbutz at Bomberg, where he was taught
Hebrew and learned how to speak Yiddish. ... While there he raised
a beard and peoth. . . . When he came to Rabbi Shapiro, the rab-
binic organization decided to make an inquiry into the youth's past
for fear that his • intentions might not be honorable. . . . Pleased by
the results of the survey and the numerous interviews with the
youth, the rabbinical body decided to convert the young man with
all the traditional ceremonies.
