Strong Democratic Plank Supports Israeli State Direct Teletype Wire to The Jewish News THE JEWISH NEWS-5 Friday, July 16, 1948 All Lydda Taken By Israeli Men PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (JTA)—The proposed draft of ' the 1948 Democratic convention platform went before the full 108-man resolutions committee Tuesday after- - noon with a Palestine plank toughened somewhat from the State Department version presented to the subcom- mittee. The wording was certain to pass the full corn- rnittee to go to the convention floor, with the White House making a last minute request for further strength- ening of the plank. Proponents of a strong plank on Israel are generally satisfied with the results of the subcommittee in revising wliat the State Department wanted in the way of a Democratic policy statement on the Middle East crisis. Some pro-Israel spokesmen felt that the plank needs more toughening to make it specific enough for imple- mentation purposes. The seven-man sub group earlier approved a draft stating, "We look forward to extending full and prompt recognition to the permanent government of Israel as soon as it is established." The 18-main subcommittee, after a fight by Rep. Emmanuel Celler of New York, changed 'the wording to read: "We favor full recognition to the State of Israel." The State Department opposed calling for flat de jure recognition on the grounds that such recognition could not be extended to a provisional government. Zionist circles have maintained that the Israel government is in • fact permanent but also point out that precedence exists in United States diplomacy for de jure recognition to provisional governments. The only other change effected by supporters of the State of Israel was over the arms embargo plank. This plank reads as follows: "We favor the revision of the arms embargo to accord to the State of Israel the right of self defense: - We pledge ourselves to work for the modi- fication of any resolution of the United Nations to the extent that it May prevent any such revision." The United Nations reference is to the remiest for non-shipment of arms requested by the international organization during the Palestine fighting. It is under- stood that the UN resolution affected only the truce period. Now that the truce 'has been suspended it, is be- lieved no UN, prohibition on arms shipments exists. Leaders Honor Dr. Silver ''''''''''''' ''' • • (Continued from Page 1) Bernadotte already has been charged by the Soviet spokesmen with having "exceeded" the pow- ers given him by the. UN and while he denied this upon his arrival at Lake Success the feel- ing is that he had no right to assume to redraw the map or to dictate impossible terms to Israel. Meanwhile a JTA teletype re- port to The Jewish News states that in Tel Aviv it was officially Announced that all of Lydda, in- cluding its railway station, is now in Israeli hands. More than 100 enemy. soldiers under British command are holding out in the police fortress and refuse to sur- render. Lydda's mayor was killed when he attempted to persuade those holding out to lay down their arms and . to surrender to the Jews. The Jews captured. a large quantity of arms and war material. Denying that the Arab Legion evacuated Lydda and Ramleh, Israeli's operations chief attrib- uted the Jews' success to excel- lent strategy. He claimed that the Arab Legion suffered heavy losses in men, armor and tanks. The battle now is raging around Ibdis on 'the Majdal Falluja line dividing the Negev from the rest of Palestine.
