TONIGHT .. JUNE 18 . . . is
the big night of them all . .. for
Detroit's Jewish young adults
... and if indications prove exact,
the Latin Quarter will have a
packed house . . . for "Salute to
Israel" .. . being given by Social,
Inc., with proceeds going to the
new Jewish State.
THE ENTIRE Latin Quarter is
being used for this great affair
• • which will feature fun, danc-
ing and entertainment ... backed
by the fine music of Artie Fields'
orchestra . . . and almost every
community young adult group
has pledged full cooperation in
attendance.
NOT ONLY WILL the finals
in the column's WILL Annual
Beauty-Personality Contest be
judged at "Salute to Israel" • . .
but prizes will also be awarded
by the committee . . . to "Miss
Israel" and second and -third
places ... from the eight finalists
who were selected through their
photographs.
TICKETS TO "Salute to Israel"
may still be obtained from any
member of tire board by Social,
Inc.. .. or they will be delivered
by calling . . , Bill Zolkower,
UN. 3-5844 . . . Sue Slobin, HO.
3067 . . Hershel Lewis, TY. 4-.
5289.
WHEN SHE REACHED her
Mah Jong game last week . . .
Alice Gamble had a story to tell
the girls. She took a cab to Mrs.
Herman Olshansky's home . . .
and discovered while enroute that
she wouldn't have enough money
for the full fare . . . When the
meter reached the sum in her
purse, she called to the driver
and told him to let her out . . .
explaining the situation and The
hackster replied, "Listen, lady,
money isn't everything. There's
still what you call chivalry. You
just sit still." He flipped his flag
. . . took her to her destination
and said, "You're just like my
wife."
DISA 'N DATA .. . Male addi-
tion to family of David Gutman
is reason for much joy around the
household of Bnai Brith's very
fine vocal artist . . . David says
that as soon as little Arthur Sam-
uel can utter a word .. . it'll be
to some tune . . . Why are so
many leading handball stars quit-
ting membership at the Jewish
Center? . . in favor of YMCA
facilities? . . . One says it's the
lack of competition and another
that the Center leaves much to
be desired in the way of policy.
Health ed director, Sam Levy,
will do well to look into this mat-
ter . . . That neon Flag of Zion
made for the recent celebration
by Lou Simon . . . and creating
much comment in the window of
Simon's Sign Service on Linwood
will be turned over to the Zionist
Organization . . . Don't think
Jewish News ad manager, Sid
Shmarak, isn't a proud pappy
these days . . . what with 9-year
old son, Arthur, winning a quiz
kid contest . . . Regards from Iz
Waldman in California . . . He's
working for the Bureau of Miss-
ing Persons in L. A. . . . and tells
of old fellow who reported that
his wife had been missing for 15
years. A bit shocked, Iz inquired
why he was just reporting it now
. . . after all this time . . . and
the man explained, "I just got
lonesome."
AL ROSENBERG is probably
one of the youngest successful
caterers in the United States .. .
but what he lacks in age he
makes up for in experience. Al
celebrated his 25th birthday, last
week ... as head kosher catering
gent at Hotel Fort Wayne. '
COMMUNITY SCENE . Mil-
ton Shorr of Dexter-Boston Flor-
ists, passing out flowers instead
of cigars .•on birth of tiny Ger-
ald Norman . . . Mother is for-
mer Lil Dorfman . . and the
little lad weighed only 5 pounds,
4 ounces . . Funnymen Ben
Fader and Willie Ziskind adding
to their repertoire of comedy an-
tics ... for purpose of entertain-
ing folks at South Haven again,

this year •.
. . Sign in window of
Linwood Ave. appliance store .
"Don't kill your wife. Let our
washing machines do the dirty
work." . . . Face-lifting at 12th
St. Council . . . Director Harold
Weiss is mighty proud of the re-
decorating job done by National
Council of Jewish Women . . .
Bnai Brith Youth Organization
all hepped up over coming na-
tional convention in Detroit. . .
It'll be the first joint Young Men's
and Women's session ever held
. .. and pre-planning for it is of
the fullest measure.
CHILDREN'S DEPT.... Eight-
year-old Beverly' Mogill had a
birthday, last week, and among
her prize gifts were a wrist
watch and a bottle of perfume.
She talked of nothing else all
day long . . . and with guests
coming over for dinner, Mrs.
Mogill gently told her in advance,
"Now, dear, everybody knows
about your presents and every-
body is very happy for you. But
now we mustn't go on talking
about them all the time." .. Little
Beverly held her peace at the
table throughout the greater part
of the meal . . . until a lull oc-
curred in the conversation and,
unable to restrain herself any
more, she burst forth, "If anyone
hears anything or Smells any-
thing it's me!"

We congratulate all of the con-
firmancls, graduates and conse-
crants. The beginning's behind
you and it'll be a hard trek on the
upward trail but the going will
be easier if you remember to
read a book without an assign-
ment and that services are held
at your synagogue or temple on
other days besides Rosh Hashan-
ah and Yom Kippur.
