LAKE SUCCESS
Lake Success is a good listening post for gossip via the interna-
tional grapevine. Most of the gossip these days revolves around
Palestine and the secret negotiations over the fate . of Israel going
on between America and tie United Kingdom. The dirtiest deal in
recent political history, worse perhaps than the sell-out at Munich,
is now being cooked up by the State Department and the British
Foreign Office.
Harry Truman is likely to unbosom himself of some more I-Love-
Israel sentiments before he completes his tour. No reason to believe
these sentiments, or anything the President "doeS"—verbally. Put
it on paper, Mr. President, seal it. Conveniently out of the capital
while these intrigues are being cooked up, Truman may claim again,
as he did when Austin announced reversal of America's Palestine
policy while the President was vacationing, that he had known noth-
ing about it, that it was contrary to his instructions. -
Not again, Mr. President. As Chief Executive you are responsi-
ble for what happens with and without your knowledge.
. The truce period will be used to conduct psychological warfare
against Israel and its supporters in this country. Several leading
Jewish organizations, it is reported, have been ordered to register
as foreign agents. The order came from the Justice Department just
two weeks before •Attorney General Clark unburdened himself—
at the Sol Bloom dinner—of another ostensibly pro-Israel speech,
in the adMinistration's universally notorious tradition of ambiguity.
At Lake Success there is little hope that anything butsa double-
cross will come out of the truce. If anything better does come out,
it will surprise everyone and will be due solely to the strength and
determination of Israel. The double-crossers are worki.ng overtime.
