Rabbis Establish Vital Statistics
Bureau for Jewish Community
A central registry of vital sta-
tistics for the Jewish community
was established last week by
the Orthodox and Conservative
rabbinate of the city.
The Council's office at 9105 Lin-
wood will henceforth maintain a
file of all marriages, divorces,
births and deaths for . Detroit
Jewry, with pertinent informa-
- tion on each event.
The registry a deaths will note
not only the date of the Yahrzeit
but will list tne deceased's af-
filiations and important dates in
his life. The marriage record
will include information about
the families of both bride and
bridegroom, and the birth record
will include the child's family
lineage.
"During the 1878 years of the
Diaspora, such records, maintain-
ed by the Kehila (Central office
of the Jewish community), estab-
lished the identity of Jews wher-
ever they might be. They also
served as a fortress . against as-
similation and disintegration-. . .
Up to the last decade; . many in
the new world had maintained a
link of gemology with the old
world. Today, all these ties and
the cultural verities of such
records are gone .. . This com-
munal record can become a faith-
ful steward of our lives, our
achievements, so that the memo-
ry of us may be engraved in the
heart of the community," the
rabbis declared in announcing
the new procedure.
The following rabbis were in-
strumental in initiating the bu-
reau of vital statistics: Rabbis.
Leizer Levin, Joseph Thumin,
Joseph Eisenman, Joseph Rabin-
owitz, Isaac Stollman, Leopold
Neuhaus, Joshua Sperka,' M. J.
