JWV Elects First World
War II Vet State President

Among The guests at the Jewish War Veterans' banquet last
Sunday evening at Hotel Tuller were (left to right) MARTIN TEAS-
DALE, vice commander, Department of Michigan, American Legion;
JULIUS H. KLEIN, national commander, Jewish War Veterans;
HAROLD MORAN, newly-elected commander, Department of Mich-
igan, Jewish War Veterans; RICHARD V. O'MEARA, third, vice
commander, Michigan Catholic War Veterans.

Harold F. Moran was the first World War I veteran to
become commander of the Department of Michigan, Jewish
War Veterans. His election took place at the department's
annual convention held Sunday, June 6, at the Tuller Hotel.
A Detroiter and past commander of the Sgt. Morton A.
Silverman Post, Moran formerly was junior vice commander

of the department.
Other officers elected were
Philip Cantor, senior Vice com-
mander; Harold Podolsky, ,junior
vice • commander; Ben Balm,
judge advocate; Herbert 'Burdick,
assistant judge advocate; Joseph
Simons, quartermaster; Norman
Berkley, adjutant. Harold Nor-
man was appointed chief of staff;
Harry Nathan, historian; Rabbi.
Morris Adler, chaplain, and Rabbi
Herbert Eskin, assistant chaplain.
The department's Ladies' Aux-
iliary convened,at the same time.
Mrs. Samuel Rhodes was elected
department president, with Rose
Gottleib, senior vice. president;
Cecil Sanders, junior vice /presi-
dent; Berte Troy, treasurer; Rose
Cantor, conductress; Ida Roth-
man, chaplain, and Frieda Panzer,
guard.
The convention recessed at
noon to, allow the delegates to
attend reburial services for Lt.
Raymond Zussman, Pfc. Alan
Emery and Pfc. Lloyd. Shaw.
At the convention, banquet
that evening, Julius Klein, na-
tional JWV commander, was
guest speaker. Klein also in-
stalled the newly-elected depart-
mental officers. In his talk, the
national chief detailed some of
the areas in. which the Jewish
War Veterans have been acting
tilt behalf of the Jewish corn-
munity. He also told of the liaison
that has been developed with
major veterans' organization.

Butzel Memorial
Fund Reported
Rising Steadily

Contributions from both Jew-
ish and non-Jewish friends of
Fred M. Butzel have reached the
Jewish Welfare Federation office
in sizable number since the an-
nouncement of the creation of
the Fred M. Butzel Memorial .
Fund, Julian H. Krolik, president
of the Federation, announced this
week.
"The Federation gratefully
acknowledges the spontaneous
tributes to Mr. Butzel's memory,"
Krolik said, "and the board of
the Federation will decide upon
a suitable memorial to which
these contributions will be ap-
plied."
Notes accompanying the con-
tributions expx ess sincere and
deep appreciation of Mr. Butzel's
tremendous influence on the de-
velopment of the Jewish and gen-
eral community. Tau Epsilon
Rho, a legal fraternity, whose
members voted a. special con-
tribution to the 1948 Allied Jew-
ish- Campaign in memory of Mr.
Butzel, the drive's honorary
chairman, .expressed, in brief, the
feeling which runs through all
of the letters — "No better man
ever set foot on this earth."

general chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal and former Secre-
tary of the Treasury, was award-,
ed a citation by the National Fed-
eration of Jewish Men's Clubs of
Morris Gleicher was elected the United Synagogue of Ameri-
