Campaign Calls For Cash
For Israel Emergency

Cash is needed immediately to carry on the work
of rehabilitation, reconstruction and state-building, and
alt contributors to the Allied Jewish Campaign are
called upon to send checks for all or as much as possible
of their pledges at once to campaign headquarters, 600
Owen Bldg.
At the workers' report meeting on June 2, Abraham
Feinberg, chairman of Americans for Haganah, out-
lined the urgency of the present situation and said that
Detroit is expected to contribute the sum of $3,500,000
towards the $75,000,000 minimum sum needed by Aug.
1.Campaign leaders immediately proceeded with efforts
to secure Detroit's share in the emergency effort.
Feinberg outlined the activities of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee in providing relief for dsplaced
persons in Europe and described how the DPs' resettle-
ment in Israel is being speeded. He said that newcom-
ers to Palestine are coming in at the rate of 15,000 a
month.
Allied Jewish Campaign workers this week reported
raising a total of close to $5,450,000 and are continuing
the drive to raise the remaining $750,000 of their goal
in the trade and professional divisions, as the Women's
Division and Junior Division held their closing meetings
this week.
Maurice Aronsson, campaign chairman, and Isidore
Sobeloff, campaign director, emphasized the need for
covering the remaining 20 per cent of the prospects in
order to reach the $6,300,000 goal. As of June 2, the
total raised was $5,306,000.
Mr. Feinberg emphasized that other needs, in addi-
tion to the Palestinian causes, have a call upon American
Jewry. "The exhilaration over the new State of Israel
should not make us forget the thousands of Jews in dis-
placed persons camps in Europe," he declared.
Outlining some of the tasks of the JDC European
program, Feinberg pointed out that the care of 185,000
Jewish children is borne by the JDC and the schooling
of 60,000 boys and girls is also included in the JDC pro-
gram.

400 Women Volunteers End
Drive With $602,000 Total

More than 400 workers in the
Women's Division of the 1948
Allied Jewish Campaign attended
the final event of their drive at
Fran k -1 i n Hills Country Club
Wednesday, when closing reports
showed that the Division had
achieved its best record to date—
in terms of amount' of coverage
and spirit, according to Mrs. Max
R. Frank, president of the divi-
sion. Mrs. Frank extended greet-
ings to the workers in behalf of
the officers of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation and of the cam-
paign.
Featured on the program of
the party wasa "Medicine Show,"
written by Mrs. Leonard H.
Weiner,' advertising the life and
hope giving Dr. Sobelbff's Pana-
cea, a "sure cure for obesity,
ennui and the other diseases of
.unprofitable leisure."
The Women's Division, whose
drive, opening March 10, was
keynoted by Frank Gervasi, head
of Collier Magazine's Washington
Bureau, raised a total of $602,000
this year on 93 per cent coverage,
representing a 50 per cent in-
crease over last year's record
total.
The 2,000 Division workers,

under the leadership of Mrs. Jos-
eph H. Ehrlich and Mrs. Henry
Wineman, began work on the
drive when they received their
kits on March 24 at a meeting
featuring a playlet by the Tem-
ple Israel High- School dramatic
group. In the period since the
drive's inception, the women
have visited over 15,000 prog-
pects in the three sections of pre-
campaign, special gifts and gen-
eral solicitation.
High points of the women's
campaign were the f r e e d o m
luncheons, held April 14, 15 and
19, in keeping with the national
observance of April as Freedom
Month. The luncheons—given for
contributors of $365 minimum,
$100 minimum and $36.50 mini-
mum, respectively — presented
Robert St. John, noted foreign
correspondent, and Harold Katz,
American fighter in the Haganah.
Although the drive for the
women has officially ended, a
corps of faithful workers has
pledged to continue "mopping
up" until every Jewish woman
in Detroit has had an opportunity
to give to the campaign.
