Book Views Judaism's
Attitude to Science

"Science and Judaism" by Rab-.
bis Harold Leiman and Joseph
Elias is the latest issue of? Jew-
ish Pocket Books of the Agudas
Israel Youth Council of Ameri-
ca, 113 W. 42nd, New York 18.
The conclusion of this interest-
ing study, approached from the
strict traditional viewpoint, de-
clares:
"Our glorious scientific and
technological advance has carried
us to the brink of atomic self-
annihilation. Warning voices are
raised against the discrepancy be-
tween increased knowledge and
moral failure. Yet this discrep-
ancy will only disappear if . our
new knowledge itself will not be
interpreted in such a manner as
to provide a tool against our
moral advancement. It must
rather be fitted into the great
picture of the divinely created
universe which the Torah draws
for us; this alone can provide an
adequate foundation for, and
lend authority to, the demands
of morality, such as the laws of
the Torah itself present them."

400 U.S. Students File
Hebrew U. Applications

NEW YORK, (JTA) — More
than 400 Jewish students in the
United States have filed applica-
tions for entrance into the He-
brew University in Jerusalem, in
addition to the 150 who are now
studying there, it was declared
by Sir Leon Simon, chairman of
the executive council of the uni-
versity who is visiting the United
States.
Sir Leon will, during his stay
in this country, help in the $1,-
100,000 campaign for the universi-
ty now under way, $500,000 of
which is sought in New York City.
"Armored cars," Sir Leon re-
ported, "carry 150 faculty mem-
bers and students to the Hebrew
University, on the top of Mt. Sco-
pus, where they install them-
selves for a period of two weeks,
after which they are relieved by
`alternates.
In this manner, it has been pos-
sible to continue essential scien-
tific work which has been in pro-
gress for years. Otherwise the
laborious investigations and the
experimental work in some in-
stances would be completely
lost."
