vw Local Educator
Writes Outstanding
Hebrew Textbook

.

A Review by Rabbi Morris Adler

"Orah V' Simchah" (a text for He-
brew Schools) by Dr. H. Mandelbaum.

Jewish educators throughout
the land will welcome this -new
text bOiik by one of Detroit's
own teachers, Dt. 1-1; 'Mandel-
baum, principal of Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah. Twenty-two years
ago Dr. Mandelbaum issued his
first school-text '.in' Hamburg. Re-
alizing that no theory or prac-
tice could be transported un-
changed from one environment
to another, he has wisely adapted
his material and presentation to
the needs of the American Jew-
ish scene.
The book makes a fine appear-
ance and its format will from the
outset capture the eye and in-
terest of the pupil. It has numer-
ous attractive illustrations,
drawn by the author.
This text .is to be used after the
child has learned the Hebrew al-
phabet and -has begun to read. It
seeks to . prepare him for - the
study of Bible. The words and
material are of vital significance
and will give the child more than
a vocabulary. '-They will impart
to him a sense of appreciation for
the traditions and institutions of
Judaism.
The vocabulary is built around
the religious life in the Syna-
gogue and home. The purpose is
to show the "orah. v'simcha" the
light and joy of Jewish living.
Hebrew is thus taught not as a
language in isolation, but in the
context of the total life of the
Jew. The emotional and aesthetic
appeals are intelligently utilized.
Dr. Mandelbaum is to be feli-
citated on the fine understanding
of child-psycholOgy his book re-
flects and on the splendid pres-
entation of Jewish traditions on
the level of the primary grades
which his text makes.

In a report by the special sub-
committee of the Congressional
Committee on Foreign Affairs on
"Displaced Persons and the In-
ternational Refugee Organiza-
tion", submitted to the 80th Con-
gress, a praiseworthy chapter is
devoted to ORT'S work among the
Jewish refugees in the DP Camps.
It states:
"The situation is a challenge to
the members of other faiths and
to other organizations. The sub-
committee marked the differences
between the opportunities for vo-
cational rehabilitation for Jewish
children at this center and those
for other groups. The ORT pro-
gram is very effective, while such
a program for non-Jewish chil-
dren is alm9st completely lack-
ing. There is an opportunity for
constructive, humanitarian' ser-
vice for other organizations in the
field to afford like facilities and
guidance to the non-Jewish chil-
dren. ORT has done the best job
of vocational training in the dis-
placed persons camps."
ORT (Organization for Rehabil-
itation Through Training) is the
sole organization detignated by
the Joint Distribution Committee
to engage in rehabilitation train-
ing for refugees and displaced
persons.
