Honor Roll of Pioneer Zionists Here
Who Led Local Fight for Homeland

Dr. Hershman First
President of the ZOD

DR. A. M. HERSHMAN
Topping the list of Zionist
pioneers in Detroit is Dr. A. M.
Hershman, Rabbi Emeritus of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
From the very day of his arrival
in Detroit, more than 40 years ago,
Rabbi Hershman was in the van-
guard of the Zionist movement.
The first president of the Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit, after
the formation of the Zionist Or-
ganization of America as succes-
sor to the Zionist Federation of
America, under the leadership of
Justice Louis D. Brandeis, Dr.
Hershman has inspired many
audiences and has consistently
fought for the Zionist ideal.
He was a leader in the smaller
Zionist groups, especially the
Yavneh and Kadimah. Societies,
prior to the formation of the ZOA.
Prior to the formation by Dr.
Hershman of the Yavneh and
Kadimah groups, the function-
ing Detroit Zionist society was the
Knights of Zion, whose mid-
western headquarters were in
Chicago.
