Laborites Plan
Hadassah Seeks
Shekel Campaign 1,000 Members

Jews

At a meeting held last Monday
evening at the Labor Zionist
Institute, more than 250 delegates
from participating branches and
organizations mobilized their
forces for the organization of the
1947-48 Shekel campaign of the
Detroit Labor Zionist Movement.
The following officers were chos-
en to • head the drive : Sidney M.
Shevitz. and William Hordes, co-
chairmen; Norman Dr achle r, ,
Jerry Malamud, Hannah Michlin
and Harry Mondry, vice chair-
men; Bernard Linderman, secre-
tary; Berl Kumove, treasurer.
Mr. Hordes explained that be-
cause of the requirement that a
voter for World Zionist Congress
delegates must be a shekel holder
for two consecutive years, the
present campaign involved the
sale to each individual of two
shkolim, one for 1947 , and one for
1948. He gave detailed instruc-
tions to the assembled delegates
on the requirements of the Na-
tional Shekel board.
Mr. Shevitz pointed out that
the work of selling shkolim, al-
though painstaking and prosaic,
nevertheless "insures a demo-
cratic selection of leaders who are
to guide the future Jewish Com-
monwealth."
The next meeting of workers
and delegates of the Shekel cam-
paign was announced for Sunday,
Nov. 23, at 11 a. m., at the Labor
Zionist Institute, 13722 Linwood.

Elias Newman's Appealing Creations

All artists are truth seekers, prophets of a sort, finding the un-
derlying beauty beneath surface appearance. This is true of Rem-
brandt, true of Picasso, who at present finds beauty in ugliness.
Some find inner beauty in propagandized ideas, others seek to make
a true statement about nature • (Cezanne, Monet; Pissarro, etc);
all seek true statements within
the realm of their particular
choice of subject, and all artists
vvish to be judged by their es-
thetic performance. Good artists
are ethical and idealistic in paint,
having an individual point of
view and approach, seeking a
true statement of whatever facet
or art that may especially move
them as persons.
Elias Newman, an important
painter of the Palestinian scene,
is a man who fits into that pat-
tern of intellectual integrity. His
subjects are French scenes, Pal-
estinian landscapes, people of
Palestine. He is at present paint-
ing American landscape from San
Francisco to Rockport.

This year the National Feder-
ation of Temple Sisterhoods
ELIAS NEWMAN
chose the paintings of Elias New-
-Ilan for reproduction on their Art Calendar. His paintings of Pal-
'Aine give a clear, sensitive evaluation of the countryside people,
1 7iitecture, and the quality of bright sunlight and clear air peculiar
alestine. Mr. Newman painted Palestine as a Jew, fully aware of
` 1-1, history and background and found a challenge in that back-
a youth, he remembers himself as explosive, pouring
-es,ponse
to his experiences, for he traveled a great
-
feeling the pulse of the place, quickly ac-
--- nvironment. Mr. Newman believes that
