FROM LOU FRAIBERG, inter-
nal relations director of the Jew-
ish Community Council, comes
this letter which should clear up
a bit of misconception on the part
of some folks . . . He writes, in
part: "I was surprised to hear
that there are people who think
of the Jewish Comunity Council
as a date clearance bureau, and
nothing else! The importance of
this service to many of our or-
ganizations should not obscure the
other important things. whiCh the
Council does. Without going into
detail, I would like to point out
that the Council's work is of two
kinds. On one hand, it defends
the Jewish community against
anti-Semitic and anti democratic
attacks. On the other, it conducts
a positive program of activities
designed to bring to people's at-
tention the values of Jewish life
which we inherit ftom the past
and to encourage the strengthen-
ing and enrichment of our Jewish
living in the present."

Austrian Guard to Die
For Killing Seven Jews

VIENNA (JTA)—A British
military court sentenced to death
Nicolaus Been, an Austrian guard
at the Schmiedhuette Camp, who
was convicted of having shot to
death seven Jewish prisoners at
the camp during March, 1947.
It was revealed here that the
authorities have located a mass
grave in Styria, Austrian province
adjoining the Hungarian border,
containing the bodies of 27 Hun-
garian Jews. Most of the corpses
show evidence of having been
shot through the head.
