Isaac Loeb Peretz, the cele-
brated Yiddish writer whose
work appeared like a fresh breeze
in Yiddish .literature before the
turn of the century, has been
made available to English readers
by the Book League of the Jewish
Peoples Fraternal Order.
"Three Gifts and Other
Stories, - translated by Henry
Goodman. is a collection of 13 of
Peretz's best-known short stories.
The volume also includes an in-
troduction by I. Goldberg, na-
tional education director of the
JPFO, and an appreciation by
Goodman.
With this low-priced (75 cents)
paper-bound volume the Book
League (80 Fifth Avenue, New
York 11; NY) is initiating a pro-
gram for the publication of treas-
ures of Yiddish literature for
readers of English.
Yiddish readers will recognize
some of the Peretz story titles—
"Three Gifts," "If Not Still
Higher," "D o m e s t i c Bliss,"
"Bontche Shweig," "At the Fa-
kir's." "Trust,” "The Little Boy,"
"The Rebbitzin of Skul," "Sis-
ters," "The Moralist," "The Base-
ment Lodging." "The Magician,"
and "At the Head of the Dying
Man."

Receipts Show 63%
Increase Over Last Year

JERU SALEM, (JTA) —Re-
ceipts by the Jewish National
Fund from all parts of the world
during , the eight-month period
from October, 1946, to May of
this year, totalled $12,000,000.
This represents an increase of 63
percent over the same period last
year. .
The largest contribution came
from the United States where
more than $9,500,000 was raised
for JNF. Palestine's contribution
was second. The share of. all
English-speaking c o u n t r i e s
amounted to 90.6 per cent of the

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Pal-
estine government has released
immigration statistics for the six-
month period from Dec. 15, 1946,
to June 14, 1947, which revealed
that 10,500 Jewish immigrants
had been admitted to Palestine.
Nearly 3,900 of the immigrants
came from Cyprus, 2,246 from
the British zone of Germany and
543 certificates were subtracted
for illegal immigrants who es-
caped from the blockade runner
Susannah which beached on the
southern Palestine coast In ad-
dition, it listed some 2,600 cer-
tificates as issued by the Depart-
ment of Migration and 243 allo-
cated to the dependents of service
personnel.
The official Gazette announced
the new quota of 1,500 certificates
for Jews and 200 for others for
the July 15-Aug. 14 period. Two
hundred and fifty certificates will
be allotted to parents of Palestine
residents during this period.
