President of JNF Council

Mr. Schlussel, a former vice-
president of the JNF Council,
for a number of years directed
the synagogue JNF collections.
He is president of Detroit Miz-
rachi and is recognized national-
ly as one of the outstanding
leaders in the orthodox Zionist
" movement. He is a profound
Hebrew scholar and Talmudist.
During Mr. Hordes' five years
of service to the JNF, income
for Palestine land redemption in
Detroit increased five-fold.
In his installation address at
the annual meeting, Mr. Hordes
reviewed the local activities for
JNF and appealed for increased
activities to be conducted by all
Zionists without regard to party
differences.
The annual JNF meeting was
addressed by Mark King, former
field worker for the Zionist Fed-

.Joe Yanich, of the Wayne Uni-
versity Chapter of the Inter-col-
legiate Zionist Federation of
America, was elected to the Cen-
tral Executive committee at the
national IZFA convention held
June 22-25 in Pittsburgh.
Over 250 delegates, represent-
ing students on 100 college cam-
puses, elected Yola Lee of Wes-
tern Reserve University, IZFA
president. Other new officers in-
clude Bernard Levinson, Harvard,
vice president; Nahmin Horwitz,
Western Reserve, secretary; Stan-
ley Goldman, Western Reserve,
treasurer, and executive commit-
tee members., Roy Abraham,
Queens College; Emanuel Feigin,
University of Chicago; Jerome
Reichstein, New York University;
Hillel Schwefel, University of
Missouri; Judith Tannenbaum,
Harvard; Nina Sachs, Western
Reserve, and Yanich.
The convention went on record
as denouncing the "undisciplined
acts of terror in Palestine and
the flagrant violations of justice
manifested liy the British gov-
ernment."
A membership goal of 10,000
was set for the 2947-48 school
year.
Launch Hospital Campaign
For Palestine's Negev
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A cam-
paign to raise $50,000 for the con-
struction of a Red Mogen David
hospital in the Negev, Palestine's
southern desert region, was
launched here at a conference of
the Jewish Labor Committee and
the Workmen's Circle.

Congress Completes
Campaign, for Books
From May 15 to June 30, De-
troiters contributed 115 cases of
books which have already been
sent to New York, to be for-
warded immediately to Displac-
ed Persons camps and Jewish
community schools in Europe.
This project of all groups of
the American Jewish Congress
was conducted under the chair-
manship of Eugene Franzblau,
assisted by Mrs. Samuel Lichten-
stein, Mrs. Bernard Silverstein,
Mrs. Murray Altman, Mrs. Harry
Kaminer, I. Bagon, Morris Miller
and Harry Kaminer of the De-
troit Section; Mrs. Norman Slo-
bin and Mrs. Louis Redstone, of
the Women's Division of the
American Jewish Congress.

Community Council
Not a Sponsor of
`Year Book' Project
The Jewish Community
Council this week made the
following statement:
"The Jewish Community
Council has received notice
that solicitation is being made
by mail and telephone for paid
advertisements and notices in
a 'Jewish Year Book'. Those
who are approached are ad-
vised that the Council is not
the sponsor of the publication
and, so far as we know, no
other official Jewish agency is
associated with the book. The
publication appears to be a
private venture for monetary
profit."

Two United Hebrew Schools
junior high school classes were
graduated June 25, at the Rose
Sittig Cohen Building, at exer-
cises in which the following

A feature of the program was
the biblical playlet "Ruth," writ-
ten by Mr. Isaacs, presented in
Hebrew by Sarah Selesny,
Jacqueline Levine and Jean
Baschin. The play was inter-
preted in English by Alexander
Singer.
There were readings and recit-
ations by the following gradu-
ates: Israel Kroll, Charles Wru-
bel, Hiram Zeldis, Marvin Speva-
kow, Isaac Levi, Leah Michlin,
Herbert Mandel, Bernard Ham-
mer, Itta Levine, Gerald Et-
tinger and Aaron Scheier.
The school chorus was - con-
ducted by Leon Gura.
The program was followed by
a reception. tendered the gradu-
ates and their friends - by the
Woman's Auxiliary.

Shetzer.
