fi A call has been issued by the
Zionist Council to all rabbis and

and Sundays of the Action for
Palestine Week to appeals in sup-
port of Jewish rights in Palestine.
Benjamin M. Laikin, president

of the Zionist Council, in a state-
ment authorized by the Action for
Palestine Week Committee, makes
the following comments on the
executions of t4e four Jews in
Palestine:
t "The death of Dov Gruner,
Dov Rosenbaum, Eliezer Kashani

and Mordechai Alkushi is the
newest tragedy in a long line of

British atrocities perpetrated by

a cowardly pseudo-liberal govern-

ment. The manner of their exe-
cution, without the maximum
legal rights, so hallowed by
Anglo-Saxon tradition, has doubt-
less shocked the civilized world.
When the history of this period
shall have been written, Dov
Gruner and his associates will be
counted with the great martyrs
of the past.

Symbol of Resistance

"The sacrifice of Dov Gruner
will become a symbol of Jewish
resistance to the long line of
British provocations, leading to
the transparent intentions of
Messrs. Bevan and Attlee to sabo-
tage the Balfour Declaration and
the Mandate and to liquidate the
Yishuv in Palestine. The steady
dissolution of Britain's will to
abide by the terms of the Man-
date, a process speeded up at the
very time when millions of Jews
were bing slaughtered, did not
fail to arouse in Jewry -and in
the whole world a wave of re-
sentment and disillusionment....
"It seams a British govern-
ment which might be expected
to react humanely to the situa-
tion in Palestine, is more con-
cerned with diplomatic intrigue
and power politics. England is no
more concerned with Arab wel-
fare thri with Jewish welfare.
"The control of the Mediterra-
nean and of the Mid-Eastern Oil
dictate the moves on the diplo-
Inatic chessboard.

American Traditions

T "The Jews of America have
been shocked by these events,
and will respond in the spirit of
American traditions, of fair play
and justice to the under-dog.
The people of the Bible have their
ageless memories, of the strength
of the spirit, and the eternal
truth that brute force will even-
tually destroy itself.
"The memory of the Martyrs
will stir Jews everywhere to re-
newed vigor-to save the remnants
of European Jewry, and to build
up in Palestine a home from
whence the spirit of Israel will
draw continued nourishment. A
chastened world will yet sustain
our pleas for survival and find a

just solution of the Jewish prob-

lem."
