MLLE. GABY ERNESTINE WOLFEAleft), 23-year old child wel-
fare worker, concealed hundreds of French war orphans with friendly
Gentile families during the war, while working with the underground.
She arrived in this country by plane last week, es the fourth recipient
of a -scholarship granted by the National Council of Jewish Women.
Despite Gestapo terrors and undue hardships, the youthful wel-
fare worker was instrumental in escorting French-Jewish children to
the Swiss border, and in aiding others to find a safe haven in private
homes found by the O.S.E., French-Jewish welfare organization. She
is shown being greeted by MRS. HORTENSE U. GOLDSTONE, head
of Council's National Overseas Service Department, at national head-
quarters, 1819 Broadway, N. Y.
Mlle. Wolff is now a student at the School of Social We!fare of
the University of California, where she will study for a year to 18
months, then return to France to continue her work of social recon-
struction.
Humor in the Bible
Seeds of humor are found in
the Bible, the Talmud, Midrash
and in the Hebrew literature of
the', -Middle Ages. From among
the countless gems of wit and
humor in the Bible, the follow-
ing can be cited examples:
Elijah mocked the prophets of
Baal and said: "Cry aloud, for
he is God, either he is talking,
or he is occupied, or he is on a
journey or peradventure he
sleeps and must be awakened."
Isaiah ridicules the makers of
graven images: "A carpenter
fashions a God from a wooden
board and from the remainder of
the wood he kindles a fire and
bakes his bread."
The Talmud says: "At Purim
one is obliged to drink so much
that he can no longer tell the
difference between cursed be
Haman and blessed be Morde-
cai."
"If thou wilt hang thyself, do
it on a high tree."
"The milk of black goats is
the same as that of white goats."
"Only small change rattles in
the pocket."

Heading for Heaven?
On Purim at the completion of
the reading of the Megillah, the
-town lunatic mounted the pulpit
and announced: "All those who
desire to die in the month of
Nissan (those who die in Nissan
go straight to heaven), please
take notice, that it is time to get
sick."
