Polish Jews Are Maintaining Active
Group Life, Committee Head Says

WARSAW, (JTA)—Anti-Sem-
itic agitation has dropped sharp-
ly as a result of the energetic
measures taken by the Polish
government, Dr. Adolph Ber-
man, newly elected president of
the Central Committee of Polish
Jews, told the Jewish Telegraph-
ic Agency. He estimated there
are at present about 100,000 Jews
in the country.
"T he opinion prevailing
abroad that the Jewish commun-
ity in Poland will be reduced to
insignificance is completely base-
less," Dr. Berman said. "The
number of Jews in Poland today
is comparatively small. How-
ever, the Jewish community here
is active and is nationally con-
scious. All Jewish political
groups in the country are striv-
ing to make Jewish life produc-
tive and highly cultured."
"The Jews of Poland," Dr.
Berman pointed out, "have al-
ways been a part of world Jewry
and will continue to be. The
Central Committee of Polish
Jews will make every effort
possible to maintain close con-
tact with communities in other
parts of the world. Most Polish
Jews feel closely linked with

Hits Anti-Bias Bill

ALBANY, (JTA) — Defeat of
the Austin-Mahoney Bill, which
would bar discrimination by in-
stitutions of higher learning in
New York State, was urged by
the New York State Catholic
Welfare Committee, in a letter to
members of the Legislature.
The Conference charged the
measure was "un-American" and
contained "passages and provi-
sions that infringe on the funda-
mental rights of parents." It
said further "the purposes of the
Austin-Mahoney Bill seriously af-
fect the freedom of all educa-
tional institutions in this State."
The Catholic statement suggested
that since a commission has been
named by the Legislature to
study -discrimination by univer-
sities, no new legislation be acted
upon until its report is completed.

Protestants Join Congress
In Fight for Tolerance Bill
NEW YORK (JTA)—Two major
Protestant church groups joined
the American Jewish Congress in
urging immediate passage of the
Austin-Mahoney Bill which would
ban discrimination by colleges in
New York State. They challenged
the stand of the Catholic Welfare
Board which has voiced opposi-
tion to immediate passage of the
legislation..
Dr. Carl H. Voss, secretary of
the Church Peace Union, a lead-
ing Lutheran group, urged that
this session of the Legislature
"should enact a law to prevent
racial and religious discrimination
in our institutions of higher learn-
ing. We cannot move too quickly
against hatred an dprejudice."

Central Committee Asks
School System Recognition
WARSAW, (JTA)—A delega-
tion of the Central Committee of
Polish Jews submitted a mem-
orandum to the Polish Minister
of Education asking full recogni-
tion of the Jewish school system
in Poland.
There are 32 Jewish schools lo-
cated in principal cities, none of
which receive government sub-
sidy. The delegation askedplat
the privileges granted Pblish
teachers and students be extended
to the Jewish schools.
Efforts to secure financial as-
sistance from the government
have been made since 1945. Howl
ever, the Minister of Education
