CAIRO — The Egyptian Public
Security Office reported that it
had uncovered a traffic in arms
between the Western desert of
Egypt and Palestine. Some ar-
rests were made involving sev-
eral Arabs and Jews. The traffic
was on a large scale, officials
said, and apparently the arms
were taken to Palestine by army
lorries.
According to the police, the
arms, salvaged from desert
dumps left from the Allied bat-
tles against the Nazi forces dur-
ing the war, were retrieved from
guarded, barbed-wire enclosures
by Arabs, who often risked in-
jury or death from hidden Ger-
man land mines. They then sold
them to "terrorist" Jews.
