THE MARTYRS' HYMN-EXPRESSION

WARSAW (JTA)—Repatriated
Jews who, after arriving from the
USSR were settled by the Polish
authorities in the former German
city of Stettin, now are panic-
stricken as a result of the mount-
ing anti-Jewish propaganda and
terror there, which follows the
same pattern as in other parts of
Poland.
Increased terroristic activities
on the part of local Poles are
forcing the Jews to cross the bor-
der en route to the American zone.
According to a report reaching
here, there are at present no more
than 6,000 Jews left in Stettin,
and even this number is dwin-
dling. Only several weeks ago the
number exceeded 26,000.
The report reveals that Jews
have been killed in the vicinity of
Stettin and that even in the cen-
ter of the city Jews have been
found murdered. The local Jewish
self-defense group prevented a
pogrom which was apparently
planned by local anti-Semites.
A Polish policeman was also
arrested in Stettin for firing at
Jewish children passing in the
street. Two Jewish children,
wounded by his bullets, had to
undergo operations. One of them,
an 8-year-old girl, had her legs
amputated. and the other, a boy,
lost his right arm.

Jews Dragged From Trains
. in Poland; Hero Murdered
LODZ (JTA)—Jews are still be-
ing dragged off Polish trains de-
spite intensified government ef-
forts to combat anti-Semitic ter-
rorism and anti - Government
groups. A report reaching the
Jewish Committee here states that
armed terrorists removed five
Jews from a Lodz-Cracow train.
It it assumed they have been mur-
dered.
Another report states that 23-
year-old Chaim Pszenica. a Jewish
officer in the Polish Army, who
was decorated with the highest
honors for bravery on the battle-
field, was murdered on the road
from Kalushin to Siedlece. His
body was brought to Siedlece
where he was buried with military
honors.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Italian government has offered to
accept 10,000 of the 25,000 Jewish
refugees from Austria when the
United States is seeking to lodge
temporarily . in Italy.

Talks are continuing in Rome in
an attempt to reach agreement
for acceptance of the 25,000:
Acting Secretary of State Dean
Acheson confirmed last week that
the Italians had tentatively re-
jected the American request. Rea-
sons given at that time by Italy
were lack of adequate food and
facilities to care for the refugees,
although the American proposal
specified that they be accommod-
ated without cost to Italy.

REHOVOTH, Palestine, (JTA)
—Following a protest by the Jew-
ish settlers of Rehovoth and the
Hebrew press of Jerusalem and
Tel Aviv, Polish troops of Gen.
Wladislaw Anders' Second Army
Corps have been transferred
from Rehovoth to Jaffa and other
Arab centers. Polish soldiers were
responsible for two murders in
Rehovoth within the last few days.
The funeral of Moshe Monobla,
2lyear-old Jewish soldier killed by
a Polish officer, was turned into
a huge demonstration againg the
anti - Semitic behavior of Polish
soldiers at Rehovoth. Participants
carried banners reading: "Free
Palestine from Anders' troops."

A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Rapidly spreading in the DP camps in Europe, in Palestine, and
in many communities in the United States is the Jewish Martyrs'
Hymn, ANI MA'AMIN The Hymn has as its text a paraphrase of
Article XII of Maimonides' Thirteen Principles of Faith. The melody
was first brought to Palestine by Yossel Ostrovetzer, a survivor of the
Warsaw ghetto.
The musical score (reproduced above) and the story of the
mystic melody's origin, revealing the psychic conditions of the sur-
vivors and pointing up the healing quality cf their hope for a
Return to Zion. were presented to American Jewry in a recent issue
of Land and Life. a national magazine.. published by the Jewish
National Fund under the editorship of William Z. Spiegelman.
