JWB Gets Aid of Army, Navy Heads, Jewish Chaplains,
USO, Thousands of Volunteers for Camp,
Synagogue and Ship Services

Sets $581,933 Record

NEW YORK — A 15 per cent in-
Nrease in the funds raised by the
1945-46 combined campaign of
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations and the Hebrew
Union College has been announced
by Roger W. Straus of New York,
national icampaign chairman. For
the fiscAl year ending June 30.
1946, $581.933 was raised.
The combined campaign of the
UAHC and HUC. of which Jerome
L. Levy is national finance di-
rector, raises funds for the main-
tenance and support of the UAHC
and the Hebrew Union College,
Cincinnati. It is an annual cam-
paign, not to be confused with
Foundation Fund of the Hebrew
Union College, which is seeking
to raise capital funds for the col-
lege.

CINCINNATI—Rabbi Alvin I.
Fine, Hebrew Union College '43
graduate, has been appointed to
the newly-established post of di-
rector of field activities of the
college.
Dr. Julian Morgenstern. presi-
dent, in making the announce-
ment. said that Rabbi Fine will
have his offices at the college in
Cincinnati.
Rabbi Fine's duties will include
establishment and maintenance of
contacts with prospective HUC
students; liaison between the col-
lege and congregations through
the country in co-operation with
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations; super vi sion of
HUC students' bi-weekly and High
Holyday services in various cities.

Dr. O. D. Schwartz Back
From Army. Resumes Practice
Dr. Oscar D. Schwartz, formerly
a lieutenant-colonel in the U. S.
Army Medical Corps, has returned
to Deteoit and has resumed prac-
tice of _medicine in the David
Broderick Bldg.

WASHINGTON, D. C.—(JPS)
—The Federal Fair Employment
Practice Committee. created by
executive order of the late Presi-
dent Roosevelt, June 25, 1941,
went out of existence at mid-
night. July 1, after warning in
its final report that the gains of
Negro, Mexican-American and
Jewish workers were being lost
rapidly through an "unchecked
revival" of job discrimination.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A nine-
man committee appointed by the
city council will hold public hear-
ings soon to investigate the ex-
tent of racial discriminatiorr is
the selection of teachers and the
admission of students in the
city's schools.
The committee is authorized to
"examine into, study and investi-
gate the admission practices and
policies of all educational insti-
tutions within the city claiming
to be non-sectaran. for the pur-
pose of ascertaining whether. or
to what extent, these institutions
or any of them practice discrim-
ination against any person or
persons because of race, color,
creed, religion or national origin,
either in the admission of stu-
dents or employment of members
of their teaching staffs."
