Congregational Activities
Impressive Ceremonies to Mark
NW Congregation Dedication
.
'Ceremonies celebrating t h e
opening of the newly completed
social hall of the Northwest
Hebrew Congregation and Center
also will be the occasion for the
introduction to the community of
the Synagogue's spiritual leader,
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal, this Sun-
day.
Rabbi Segal will be the princi-
pal speaker for the afternoon
dedication ceremony at 2:30 p. m.
at the Synagogue at Curtis and
Santa Rosa. The dedication will
witness the opening of the doors
by one of the members to be fol-
lowed by a solemn processional,
led by the president, Ira G. Kauf-
man, the past president, Alexan-
der Moss, and the board of the
congregation, as well as the presi-
dents of the various congrega-
tional organizations. Alice Gold-
smith of the Sisterhood, Samuel
Bez of the Men's Club, Edith Op-
erman of the Young People's
Group and Gerald Loomis of the
Junior Congregation, all followed
by their respective officers and
Board members.
Bearers of six Sifre Torah will
head the procession of the Sacred
Scrolls for the official presenta-
tion to the Congregation.
The Eternal Lamp will be kin-
dled and the cantor will recite
the blessing.
The evening banquet program
will begin at 6:30 p. m.
The Rev. Jacob Sonenklar will
act as the cantor and soloist.
After brief remarks by Alfred
Helfgott, chairman of the over-
all dedication committee, and J.
Maurice Karo, chairman of the
Building Committee, the president
and Rabbi will greet those pres-
ent, followed by the principal
speaker of the evening, Rabbi
Morris Adler. After his address,
the presentation of gifts by the
congregation to the Synagogue
will be made, to be followed by
Hatikvah and dancing to the
music of Jules Klein orchestra.
The evening also will be en-
livened by tributes to the past
officers of the Congregation and
presentation of gifts.

Chosen to Officiate at
Beth Aaron Synagogue
To Honor Sponsors
At Supper Sept. 22
Yeshivoth .Chachmey Lublin
has arranged for a supper honor-:
ing the sponsors of its activities,
to be held at Zack's, 8939 12th St.,
at 6 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 22.
Yeshivoth sponsors donate $250
or more annually. The supper will
be limited to sponsors and their
families. Certificates of honor
will be distributed.
Rabbi Mordecai Yehuda Lubart,
former student in the Yeshivah in
Lublin, Poland, who was the first
of the group of students to arrive
here from Shanghai, will be the.
speaker.•
In order to provide linens and
other dormitory necessities for the
new arrivals from Shanghai, the
.• Ladies' Auxiliary of Yeshivoth
Chachmey Lublin will give a
shower at '7 p. m. Wednesday,
Sept. 18. at the Yeshivah, Lin-
wood and Elmhurst. The coopera-
tion of all Detroit women is in-
vited.
Zager Lodge Women
To Form Auxiliary
At Sept. 10 Meeting
Plans were made at a dinner at
the Wardell-Sheraton hotel for
the formation of the women's
chapter to Rabbi Mandell M.
Zager Lodge of Bnai Brith. The
dinner was given for the executive
board, their wives and the district
representatives.
An invitation is extended to the
wives of the members of Zager
Lodge and to all friends to attend
joint open meeting Tuesday, Sept.
10, at Jericho Temple. Entertain-
ment will be provided.
Plans were made for a get-to-
gether affair to be held Tuesday,
Sept. 17, at 8 p. m., at the home
of Mrs. S. S. Aaron, 2276 Oakman
Blvd.

man is a prod-
uct of the local
educational in-
stitutions, t h e
United Hebrew
Schools and
Yeshivoth Beth
Rev. Goldman Yehudah. At
present he is a student of He-
brew Theological College of Chi-
cago, where he is studying for
the Rabbinate. He did his secu-
lar work at Chicago Herzl Col-
lege. Cantor Goldman is thor-
oughly acquainted with the tra-
ditional liturgical melodies.
Since a capacity audience is ex-
pected, seats must be reserved
early.
Chachmey Lublin School
Opens New Term Sept. 8
Registration for the new term
which begins Sept. 9 is being
taken by the Detroit Hebrew
Parochial School of Yeshivoth
Chachmey Lublin.
The school offers a recognized
and thorough Jewish and English
education in 12 grades. The
students of the elementary school
are brought to school and taken
home on DSR buses. A nourish-
ing lunch is serve in the school.
Chilren now are being regis-
tered at the school office, Lin-
virood and Elmhurst. For infor-

Beth El Announces
Service on Sabbath,
Opening of School
Temple Beth El Sabbath horn-
ing services on Saturday, Sept. 14,
will be held in the main auditor-
ium from 11 to 12. Dr. B. Benedict
Glazer will conduct the services
and preach the sermon.
The opening sessions of the Re-
ligious School will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 14, for the junior
high department, and Sunday
morning, Sept. 15, for the pri-
mary, intermediate and high
school departments.
The Temple Library, open on
Saturday and Sunday mornings
and Monday and Wednesday
evenings, receives every book of
Jewish interest as soon as it is
off the press and dozens of mag-
azines and periodicals from all
over the country. Mrs. Arthur L.
Goulson is the librarian.
High Holyday services will be
conducted in the main auditor-
ium by Dr. B. Benedict Glazer
and in the Brown Memorial
Chapel by. Dr. Abraham Cron-
bach, professor 'of Jewish social
studies at Hebrew Union College
in Cincinnati.
Beth Yehudah Opens
Fall Term Monday
Yeshivoth Beth Yehudah will
open the fall term on Monday,
Sept. 9, for morning and after-
noon classes, as well as for the
Beth Jacob School for Girls.
Registration will continue this
Sunday from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m.,
at the Yeshivah office, Dexter and
Cortland.
More than 75 per cent of last
year's student enrollment of 650
already has re-enrolled in the
afternoon classes, which start at
4 p. m. The Beth Yehudah day
school, combining Jewish secular
instruction and public school
courses from the first to ninth
grades, will open at 9 a. m. Mon-
day.
Afternoon classes are from 4 to
6 p. m. and 6 to 8 p..m. Mondays
through Thursdays and from 9
to 11 a. m, and 11 to 1 p. m. on
Sundays.

Religious Freedom Drama
To Feature Radio Program
"Thomas' Kennedy," an original
radio drama by Morton Wishen-
grad depicting a phase of the
struggle for religious freedom in
colonial Maryland, will be re-
broadcast on the Eternal Light,
Sunday, Sept. 8.
Temple Israel Re-Opens Its School
Sept. 14-15; Plans Holyday Services
The Religious School of Temple
Israel will resume its sessions for
the 1946-47 season at Hampton
School, 18460 Warrington Drive,
Saturday morning, Sept. 14, and
Sunday morning, 7 'pt. 15.
Pupils of grades 6 to 9 which
comprise the confirmation will be-
gin class work s.,n Saturday. All
other pupils will return to their
classes on Sunday.
Rabbi Fram will greet the pu-
pils at special assemblies.
Temple Israel Religious School
Community = Is Urged
To Withhold Aid from
Mushroom Synagogues
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil has issued a call to the Jews
of Detroit to attend only the es-
tablished synagogues on High
Holidays, re-affirmimng the posi-
tion taken last year that support
be withheld from mushroom syn-
agogues.
"The observance of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur at
privately operated services in
halls, theaters, and stores is not
in keeping with proper conduct-
ing of a religious service. Serv-
ices held in such surroundings
cannot be carried on in a proper
and dignified atmosphere. Ob-
servers and neighbors in the
community cannot help but get
an undesirable impression of our
religious worship,". the Council
states.
The synagogue committee of
the Community Council has rec-
ommended that those synagogues
which have the proper facilities
should undertake to conduct sup-
plementary services for the High
Holyday s. Congregation Bnai
Moshe announced that supple-
mentary services will be held in
its social hall. Congregation
Bnai David states that unas-
signed holiday tickets for mem-
bers will be available to non-
members.

Temple Israel under the direction
of Rabbi Fram are invited to affil-
iate themselves with the congrega-
tion. The membership committee
of Temple Israel, under the chair-

son to receive applications.
Sabbath Eve services of Temple
Israel which during the summer
were held at 610 Boulevard bldg,
have been restored to their reg-
ular locale in the Lecture Hall of
the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Temple Israel will hold its High
Holyday Services beginning with
Rosh Hashanah Eve, Wednesday
night, Sept. 25, in the large audi-
torium of the Institute. To pro-
vide for the contingency that the
Auditorium may no longer be large
enough to accommodate the entire
membership of the Congregation
which now exceeds 800, Temple
Israel has arranged for an over-
flow service to be held in the
Lecture Hall of the Art Institute.
Rabbi Milton Aron, director of the
Hillel Foundation of Wayne Uni-
versity, will preach and Baruch
Cohon of Cincinnati will serve as
Cantor.
Anyone who wishes to worship
at Temple Israel during the
High Holy Days, which will be re-
served for members, is invited to
enroll with the congregation,
Throughout September, the mem-
bership committee will be avail-
able at the offices of Temple Is-
rael to receive applications.

Wins Yeshiva U. Award
NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Jo-
seph J. Schwartz, European di-
rector of the Joint Distribution
Committee, has been selected by
Yeshiva University as winner of
its annual $1,000 Mordecai Ben
David Foundation award.
