Agency's Proposal vs. Ghetto Plan
By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ
A. SERIOUS GRIEVANCE
American Jews have a serious grievance
against the press and radio commentators
in this country.
Instead of evincing sympathy for the
survivors from Nazism, many of whom
are sole remnants of large families which
have been exterminated -by the Hitlerites,
newspaper and radio men have put on a
front of "impartiality" which,' in reality,
is hard-hearted indifference to misery.
These people have made it a point to
speak of "terrorism" and- so-called "illeg-
ality" of Jewish immigration, without
giving consideration to the important ele-
ments involved in the' issue:
1.. The official Jewish Agency, Hagan
ah and Jews generally disapprove- of and
condemn violence, and only a handful
of Jews were responsible for recent
actions. Haganah, however, has the en-
dorsement of Jewish public opinion in
its efforts to bring Jews to Palestine—
even when it becomes necessary to
scuttle a ship or to destroy a radar
station which is used to detect arrival
of boats with visaless immigrants, for
the purpose of preventing their entrance.
It is a matter of life or death, and to
guarantee life, Jews must be enabled to
reach Palestine. But Haganah and Jews
generally desire to accomplish their tasks
without bloodshed and with a minimum
of hurt to anyone.
2. There is only one element of illegal-
ity in the entire political set-:up affect-
ing Jewish aspirations in Palestine, and
that is Britain's interference with the
right of Jews to settle the European
survivors in Eretz Israel. To speak of
"illegal" immigrants to Palestine, 'at a
time when Great Britain has established
an , army of 200,000 soldiers in the land _
and has permitted the settlement of
large numbers of Arabs from neighboring
countries, is to resort to most inhuman
tricks to interfere 'with Jewish rights.
The fact that the press has misunder-
stood and therefore misinterpreted the
issue, and that radio commentators have
editorialized upon the issue to the detri-
ment of our people, is most deplorable.
In one instance, a Detroit radio an-:
nouncer, speaking of the Mufti, assumed
to speak of traditional . Arab hospitality
for those seeking refuge in Arabic, coun-
tries as political exiles. This comment was
especially shocking since the commenta-
tor was reporting on the expose of the
Mufti as an arch enemy of the de/no-
crate cause and as collaborator with the
Nazis, :and since it is a matter of record
that Jews are unsafe in Arab territories
outside of Palestine.
America's spirit of fair play demands
that there should be a change in these
attitudes and that news and radio men
should show respect for the innermost
feelings of the Jewish people and for
Jewish rights by refusing to swallow un-
truths and British propaganda. '

clIEFIKER' IN JOURNALISM
"Hefker" is an almost untranslatable
.,Jewish term. It may be said to mean the
height of irresponsibility, or the acme of
anarchy.
It is the only term we - - know that de-
scribes the tragic status of many English=
Jewish newspapers which are nothing
more than extortionist advertising media
getting all they can and giving -as little as
possible.
This charge is based primarily. on the
latest and most ,revolting occurrence in
Jewish journalism. The publishers of a
mid-western weekly secured a . buyer. for
their "property" at a good price. But
even the' high price did not, satisfy the
exploiters of community good they
beat the buyers to the gim by issuing a -
32-page Rosh Hashanah edition on. Aug. 9.
Thus, the handful of • Jews who have
been receiving this periodical were greeted
with' a Shanah Tova issue - five -weeks
fore 'Rosh Hashanah!
How do you like such arrogant business? .
But why blame the perpetrators,of such
a scheme, when it is made possible 'by
the shocking indifference of communities
which encourage "hefker" dealings in
many other community affairs?

I Am Protestant,
Gentiie, Employer
By DR. DANIEL A.4) 0LING
"If this- piece has a title, it should be
taken from the book of Isaiah: 'Come,
let us reason together."
"In a small way I am a capitalist; I
am an employer; I am a Protestant and
a Gentile. Now between employer and
employe there are grave differences.
Strikes and lockouts threaten our na-
tional economy.
- "Between Catholic and Protestant, too,
there are growing frictions. And cer-
tainly anti-Semitism has not disappeared
from the United States.
"As an employer, a-. Protestant and a
Gentile, what am I going to do about
these matters? To me one thing is clear:
Even though in all these relationships
the employer were 100 per cent right
and labor 100 per cent. wrong, that • fact
would not solve the problem for America.
"Ev-en though in Protestant-Catholic
relationships the Protestant were 100
per cent wrong, that would not solve the
problem. And even though the Jew were
guilty as charged by his most extreme
enemies that fact would not solve the
problem of anti-Semitism.
"American democracy, religious liberty
and the entire system of free enterprise
would be doomed if capital and labor
would not compose their difference, if
our two great faiths could not regard
each other with mutual good will, and
if anti-Semitism, unrebuked by the Chris-
tian majority, were allowed to increase
in the land.
"As an employer, as a. Protestant - and
as a Gentile, I know that I and my kind
are not 100 per cent right! Perfection or
near perfection does not exist in any '
group among us, nor with any one of us.
"Our American unity is embarrassed
and all American freedoms are threat=
ened by industrial controversies, religi,
ous antipathies and racial intolerance.
"Isaiah has the formula for our time.
He speaks for employer and employe
alike, for Protestant, for Catholic, for
Gentile and Jew: 'Come, let us reason
together.'
"For in. reason we shall . find the ans-
wers and -in the living faith that is
America. . America for peace as well as
for war we-• shall maintain and
strengthen our unity."
-
-
halted by armed gangs, the occupants
examined, and the Jews shot."
. This is the story of postwar "liberated"
Europe!
But the Big Powers ..are silent. They are
callous - to-Jewish sufferings and needs.
And the Jewi, who - had expected libera-
tiOn upon the defeat of the Axis, repeat
the outcry:
WHENCE COMETH OUR HELP?

COOPERATION OF NON-JEWS
Many "nOn-Jews have indiCated a desire
to be helpful in ' !le battle for justice for
the Jew.
Excellent examples. are the unsolicited
cOntributions that are being received from
them here by the jewiSh National Fund
as a protest against British perfidy.
The interesting declaration by thefor- .
mer GI who served. in Palestine, Milton B.
Stevens of Metamora, Mich., that he is
prepared to re-enlist if the .U. S. will act
in. behalf of the Jewish position in Pales-
tine, is another proof of the readiness of
Christians to be helpful.
With such friends, there should be an
early victory'for the cause of justice.

REMEMBER ABA HUSHI
The British are out for Aba Hushi, the
unofficial ruler of Haifa, chief of the dock-
workers, beloved' by Jews and Arabs, far-
orite of the Druze. No wonder. The British
know that so long as Aba Hushi is free,
Haifa will remain Jewish despite British
warships in its harbor. And ships taking
Jews to Cyprus will be beached so long
as his spirit prevails. Remember the name
Aba Hushi—who will match desperate
Jewish, wits against the British -blockade.
Remember him, too, as the man who
helped maintain sea transport between
Haifa and other Levant ports for the Al-
lies during the war I He is a man any
honorable_ people would be proud to have
as an ally. But who says that the British
Labor Government consists of honorable
people?

STATE DEPARTMENT
Is it really-true that the White House
is kept in the dark by' the • State Depart-
ment? Bartley Crum says that records re-.
Veal that the State Department has -been
circumventing the White House ever since
1920, and dispatching conciliatory and
cancelationary statements to the Arabs
following each pro-Zionist commitment by
the White House. We may rightfully ask:
Where were Zionists! WaShington look-
outs • all these yearS? ' In recent years the
situation has changed ; with the Jewish
Agency and the American -Zionist Emer-
gency Council on their guard. But all these
years?

PHILADELPHIA,: STORY .
Out in Philadelphia. the -Christian Na-,
tionalist Committee (you know what the
combination of the words . Christian Na-
tionalist has come to connote) is prepar-
ing for a rip-roaring campaign.
A special committee appointed by the
executive of the Jewish Agency after the
conclusion of its sessions in Paris will soon
arrive in the United States . . . Its mission
is to reconcile differences which have de-
veloped between the Jewish Agency and
the American Zionist Emergency Council
and which culminated in Dr. Abba Hillel
Silver's resignation from the Agency . . .
Dr. Silver's resignation was chiefly due to
the fact that Dr. Nahum Goldrnann, act-
ing as the representative of the Jewish
Agency, by-passed him during the recent
negotiations with official circles in 'Wash-
ington . Dr. Silver, anxious not to break
internal discipline, preferred to resign.
from the Jewish Agency rather than pro-
test openly against his being disavowed,
whiCh would have created confusion in
Washington . . . He kept his resignation a
secret in order to avoid confuSion also in
the ranks of the American Zionist move-
ment ... His resignation was not accepted
by the Agency, but he has insisted upon
it . . . Meanwhile the 'news of his resigna-
tion leaked out in Paris when members of
the Jewish Agency executive talked to the
press . .. Reverberations will be heard at
the forthcoming convention of the Zionist
Organization 'of America in October, if the
special Jewish Agency committee does not
patch up things.
President Truman, a day prior to. leav-
ing for vacation, was considering seeing
Dr. Silver on the Palestine issue .. . How-
ever, since Silver does not approve of some
of the views of the Jewish Agency execu-
tive which were submitted to the Presi-
dent, he could not see Truman . . . It is
obvious that he could not reveal to the
President that he differs with some of the
points in the Jewish Agency plan, since
this would amount to undermining the
efforts of the Agency.

THE AMERICAN SIDE
Bartley . Crum, a . former member of 'the
Anglo-American Inquiry Committee on
Palestine, who lashed out againat the State
Department, charging it with sabotaging
PreSidential and Congressional decisions
ofi PaleStine, is now writing a book on
PaleStine . . . James G. McDonald, another
member of the committee, also is cOinplet-
ing a volume on Palestine . . . A third
book, not by a member of the Inquiry
Committee, will soon be ptiblished in this
country. dealing primarily with the hero-
ism of the Jewish underground movement
in Palestine;
Ihud Association of Palestine, of which
Dr. J. L. Magnes is the leader, has opened
an office in New York . . . It is appealing
for funds in America in order to promote
its activities in Palestine . . . It has pub-
lished here a- 78-page booklet "Palestine a
Bi-National State" containing the state-
ments submitted to the Anglo-American
Inquiry Committee by the Mud leaders in
Jerusalem.
Edwin Pauley, California oilman who
headed the American Reparation Commis-
sion in Gerniany, has submitted to Presi-
dent Truman a prograin for immediate
action on moving displaced. Jews from Eu-
rope to Palestine . . . He recommends that
the displaced Jews should be moved from
Germany and Austria to Mediterranean
ports and encamped there until plans are
completed for their admission to Palestine
. . He also suggests that German re-
sources, especially timber, be sent from the
Ainerican zone to help build dwellings for
the Jews admitted into Palestine . . He'
believes that- if members of 'the. United
Nations would each accept 'a certain quota
of Jews, more than 500,000 European • Jews
could be removed from EUrOpe within one
year.
