11,000 Listed as Dead
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A total of
nearly 50,000 awards for valor and
meritorious service has been re-
ceived by Jewish men and women
who served in the United States
armed forces during World War II,
it is revealed in the fifth issue of
the Jewish Welfare booklet,
"These Are the Facts." The pub-
lication also disclosed that 550,000
American Jews, or the equivalent
of 37 divisions, served in the armed
forces.
The total number of Jewish
casualties reported to date, the
JWB said, is 38,338, of whom
11,000 are listed as dead. More
than 80 per cent of the Jews in
service were in the army, 17 per
cent in the navy, two per cent in
the marine corps, and one per cent
in the coast guard. The booklet
notes that more than one-third of
all Jewish physicians in the United
States served in the armed forces.

Pointing out that the Jewish
Agency was constituted, by its
charter, to "voice the hopes of all
friends of Palestine irrespective .of
whether they are Zionists or non-
Zionists," Judge Proskauer said
that "I have reason to believe that
at this particular juncture the
Agency is evidencing an intent to
respect that principle. So long as
it so continues, it is our duty to
aid it in the discharge of its grave
responsibility.
"It is my profound conviction
that nothing should be done to
complicate or make more difficult
the arduous task that will have to
be undertaken by the Agency in
its negotiations with the British,"
he added. "Rancor, bitterness,vitu-
