Election of Rabbi Alvin M. Pop-
lack • as executive director of
Young Israel, succeeding Rabbi I.
Turner, is announced by Charles
T. Gellman, president.
Rabbi Poplack, a native of Seat-
tle, Wash., took his elementary
training at the Seattle Talmud
Torah and after completion of
courses there attended Yeshivath
Torah Vodaath. He studied at the
University of Washington in Seat-
tle and served the communities of
Boise, Ida., and Detroit as Rabbi
for High Holy Days. - He was
graduated from Rabbinical Aca-
demy of Mesivta Chaim Berlin in
Brooklyn in 1944.
The National Jewish Welfare
Board appointed him Civilian
Chaplain and field director and
assigned him to Color:110 Springs,
Colo., where he served 500 Jewish
service men in three camps, in-
cluding Carson General Hospital.
He was next assigned as area di-
rector for Missouri.
Gen. Foster, Commandant of
O'Reilly General Hospital in
Springfield, Mo., appointed Rabbi
Poplack the Civilian Jewish Chap-
lain to the Hospital, -where - 100
combat veterans of Jewish faith
were hospitalized. He directed a
progtam of readjustment for the
wounded veterans.
Rabbi Poplack comes to Young
Israel of Detroit from a similar
post with Yeshivath Beth Ye-
hudah of this city. He is a mem-
ber of the • Jewish Community
Council and an officer in Zager
Lodge of Bnai Brith.

Plans Extension of
Its Building Program
Dedication Set for Sept. 8;
Milton Krakow Engaged as
Synagogue's Cantor
An invitation is extended to the
entire community to attend the
Sept. 8 afternoon and evening pro-
grams fot the dedication of the
social hall of Northwest Hebrew
Congregation and Center, on Cur-
tis and Santa.
'Final plans were completed un-
der the chairmanship of Alfred .
Helfgott by congregational Com-
, mittees at a Meeting on Monday
evening at the home ' of Hy
Storchan.
Plans are proceeding for the
erection of the school building
above the social hall .structure, as
well as the library, small prayer-
room, the rabbi's study and con-
gregational offices.
The social hall; which will be
open far use after Sept. 8, will
have a capacity of 800 and there
will, be provisions for 'dairy ,and
meat kitchens in accordance with
dietary laws.
Cantor Milton Krakow of New
York has been retained as cantor
by a committee headed by Benja-
Min:Prod/flan. Cantor Krakow will
conduct Selihot and High Holy
Day services. Rabbi Jacob E. Segal
will deliver the sermons.
Plans are being made to conduct
daily and Sabbath services in the
new synagogue social. hall. The
prayer books edited and approved,
by the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary will be used at services.

in Nazi concentration camps until
his liberation by the Russians, last

Supplementary Holy Day Services
Temple Beth El.announces that
Dr. Abraham Cronbach, professor
of Jewish social studies at Hebrew
Union College, Cincinnati, will
conduct the supplementary serv-
ices in the Brown Memorial
Chapel on Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur. .A professional guar-
tet and organist trained by the
temple music director, Jason H.
Tickton, will render the liturgical
music. These services are open to
non-members. Cards of admission,

Detroiters Responding Liberally
To Appeal for Mo'or I lagolah
The Religious School of Temple
Beth El will reopen for the 1946-
1947 season on Saturday morning,
Sept. 14, for the Junior High De-
partment, and Sunday morning,
Sept. 15, for the Primary, Inter-
mediate and High School Depart-
ments.
Registration of new pupils is
being held daily at the school of-
fice from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. Chil-
dren must be accompanied by
either . parent or guardian when
registering. The Religious School
accepts children be ning with
the age of 4 (pre-kindergarten de-
partment) through high school
age. All former pupils win receive
detailed insti uction by mail. •
Children's Holy Day services
will be held in the Main Audi-
torium on TI- ursday, Sept. 26, at
2:30 and Saturday, Da. 5, at 2.
Dr. Glazer will preach the sermon-
ettes.
Yeshivah Students Get
Shanghai Visas to Come
Here to Chachmey Lublin
Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin of
Detroit has received word from
Students in the former Yeshivah
in Lublin, which was re-establish-
ed here, that they have -received
visas from Shanghai to come to
this country.
Since establishing -contact with
these surviving students, Yeshivath
Chachmey Lubin has been sending
them relief. Two of. the students
already are here and the rest will
arrive soon, Rabbi M. Rothenberg,
dean of the Yeshivah; announces.
A special event is being planned to
welcome them.
With funds provided by Max
Kaplan, the dormitory of the
Yeshivah has been remodeled to
accommodate more students. This
increase, it is announced, will add
to the Yeshivah's financial bur-
den.
Registration of new students in
the Yeshivah is now in progress.
The new term will commence Sept.
9. The Yeshivah is located at
Elmhurst and Linwood. For in-
forination call TO. 8-2341. .

Dr. Cronbach received his early
training at the Universitky of Cin-
cinnati, from which he received
his A. B. in 1902. He was ordained
at Hebrew Union College in 1906,
and was awaycled the degree of
Doctor of Dilrinity in 1915. From
1906 to 1919 he served a number
of 'congregations in Ohio, Indiana
and New York. Since 1922 he has
been professor at Hebrew Union
College.
Besides contributing numerous
articles to scholarly publications
and to the general press, Dr. Cron-
bach is author of "The Jewish
Book," "The Quest for Peace,"
"Prayers of the Jewish Advance"
DR. ABRAHAM CRONBACH
and "Religion and the Social Set-
ting."
Dr. Cronbach 'has been the in-
spiration of man, rabbis in their
efforts to apply the teachings of
the Prophets of Israel to the
problems of the contemporary
scene. He is nationally known for
his founding of the Peace Heroes
Memorial S.. piety whit:). he or-
ganized in 1926.
Beginning Friday night, Sept.
6, Temple Israel will resume Sab-
bath Eve service in the lecture hall
Detroit Institute of Arts. The
service will ' - egin at 8:30. Rabbi
Pram will preach. Cantor Robert
S. Tulman and Organist Karl W.
Haas will render the traditional
music of the Sabbath.
A central school for children
from all "Hashomer Hatzair" set-
tlements has been established at
Mishmar Ha-Emek, Palestine, for
150' refugee children who already
have been absorbed into the set-
tlement.
RABBI EPHRAIM OSHRI

Hagolah (Light of Exile) , the
movement; he established in Italy
for the rescue of surviving' Jewish
children.
On Sunday, at a brunch at the
Wilshire, a group of guests made
a liberal contribution.
This week-end Rabbi Oshri will
be in Toledo, but he will return
here next week to resume his work
of informing Detroit ,Jews regard-
ing the important cause he rep-
resents. He is the guest in De-
troit of Wolf Cohen of 2434 Glynn
Court.

Temple Israel Resumes
Sabbath Eve Services
are cared for in three Mo'or Hag-
olah schools. A number of the
children who were 'taken out of
Lithuania. and Poland by Rabbi
Oshri already have been sent to
Palestine and the remainder are
destined to go to the Jewish Home- -
land as soon as provisions can be
made for them.
In the course of his address
here, Rabbi Oshri described the
horrors he experienced under the
Nazis and told . of the miraculous
way in which he and- the handful
of remaining Lithuanian Jews es-
caped death at the hands of the
Hitlerites.
