More Natural Gas
Available for City
--But Unwanted
Additional natural gas for heat-
ing can be made available here
next year under the present source
of supply by the Panhandle East-
ern Pipe Line, it was announced
this week by James H. Lee, assist-
ant Corporation Counsel for De-
troit.
However, the major drawback
to securing this additional gas,
according to Panhandle Eastern,
is that the Michigan Consolidated
Gas Co. refused to negotiate for
more at the present time.
William E. Dowling, city Cor-
poration Counsel, recently ap-
peared before the Securities and
Exchange Commission at Phila-
delphia where the local gas utility
interests were seeking permission
to raise additional capital for fi-
nancing its own pipelne. In pub,
lic hearings last year before the
Detroit common council, Dowling
asserted that the proposed pipe-
line is not needed.
