This Saturday will be observed, in accordance with
tradition, as Sabbath Naharnu----the Sabbath of Consola-
tion.

Following Tisha• b'Ab, the day commemorating the
destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem
and a score of other Jewish tragedies, Sabbath .Nahantu
heralds the undying faith of the Jewish people that
Prophecy is not dead, that salvation will come for Israel,
that the European survivors will be give'' homes and
security, that God's word will prove more powerful than
the powers of tyranny.

Thus, our. people will be - comforted this Sabbath by
the consoling words of the Prophet Isaiah:

Comfort ye, comfort ye My people,

Saith your God.
Bid Jerusalem take heart,
And proclaim unto her
That her time of service is accomplished,
That her guilt is paid off;
That she hath received of the Lord's hand
Double for all her sins.

Story on Page 3

With more than 10,000 surviving European Jews
reported near the shores of Palestine in boats
sighted on the High seas—four boatloads of visa-
less refugees already having reached the Jewish
Homeland with 6,500 visaless newcomers—the par-
tition scheme remains the major issue on the Zionist
calendar.
British leaders declared this week that the
division of Palestine represents. the final solution
of the problem, and all indications are that a show-
down is imminent.
The American Cabinet Committee headed by
Henry F. Grady, called back to this country by
President Truman after strong demands were made
that the British proposal for the "federalization" of
Palestine be rejected, is now conferring with the
President, and there are new indications that a re-
vised partition plan will be accepted by Jewish
leaders, provided:

1. That 100,000 European: displaced Jews
are admitted at once and unconditionally;
2. That territorial proposals be revised to
enlarge Jewish territory, the Jewish "canton"
to include all sections .where Jews_ are _now
settled and the Negev, southern Palestine.
3. Future Jewish immigration, after the
admission of 100,000, to be under control of a
neutral commission and not of the British High
Commissioner; -
4. Better- financial arrangements be made
for the settlement of Jews.

The Jewish Agency Executive rejected the "fed-
eralization" plan at its meeting in Paris on Monday,
but there, is growing inclination to accept a speedy
solution in the form of a favorable partition, in
preference to further dilly-dallying in the event the
issue goes to the UN.
Expectations that 60,000 more Jews will leave
Poland in three months to escape killings and the
tragic position of the DPs are main causes for
pressing an immediate solution.

0 messenger of good tidings to Zion,
Get thee up on a high mountain
0 thou that tellest good news to Jerusalem,
Lift up Ay voice with strength!
Lift up, fear not;
Say unto the cities of Judah:
"Behold your God!"

How beautiful upon the mountains are the
feet of the messenger of good tidings
Who announces peace, and news of
salvation;
Who says to Zion: "Thy God reigneth!"
Hark! your w a t c h me n! they lift up the
voice, 'together they sing;
For they shall see eye to eye, when the
Lord restores Zion.
Break forth into joy, sing together, you waste

places of Jerus'alem!
For the Lord has comforted His people, He
has redeemed Jerusalem.
